Recent Rancho Cordova Tutoring Session Notes
Today the student and I mainly focused on preparation for her Algebra 2 exam. We reviewed such topics as: graphing systems of equations, creating a common denominator, and adding/subtracting systems of equations. She seemed to be doing fairly well with the material, but she really needs to practice. When finished with her Algebra 2 study guide, we briefly worked on her Chemistry study guide. We covered problems on the Ideal Gas Laws and states of matter.

The student and I worked on sequences for her quiz tomorrow. We worked from her homework assignments and practice problems I created. We covered arithmetic sequences, geometric sequences, and recursive formulas. After we went over the initial formulas, she understood the concepts and worked quickly and easily through the practice problems.

In my first session with this student, I began by asking her questions about her Spanish skills in both English and Spanish. We then got an idea of how to structure our sessions and began learning how introductions. She practiced how to introduce herself and others. We also dove into numbers; she caught on very quickly to counting and identifying numbers in Spanish! She was completely cooperative, focused, and enthusiastic throughout our entire session!

The student and I did some review work on factoring and finding the greatest common factor of two numbers using a few methods he learned in school, including the birthday cake method, the tree method, and the standard factoring method. We worked on some problems and applied all of these methods to solve them. We finished the session by playing some games to strengthen his multiplication skills. He is very proficient with the concepts, which is encouraging, but the arithmetic is what needs the most work. We will continue to focus on this in future sessions. His attitude is great, and he's eager to learn and a lot of fun to work with.

Since we met last, the student heard from her prof that some aspect of the recent assignment had to be changed. We met tonight and redid the analyses on SPSS. She interpreted the new output, and wrote up results.

Today the student and I covered dehydration of alcohols & mechanisms, and spectroscopy. We spent the majority of the session reviewing dehydration of alcohols and their mechanisms for organic chemistry. We also reviewed IR spectroscopy and tricks for identifying functional groups. I recommended that he look at as many different IR spectra as possible to get a feel for identifying functional groups.
