The student  and I started with chemistry. We reviewed ionic equations again. Net ionic equations, half equations, oxidation/reduction, etc.   We finished with related rates review. I mentioned the acronym DREDS (diagram, rates, equation, differentiate, substitute) to try and address related rates.   Overall, he is doing well. He seems to still get stuck on a few minor details, but overall he seems to be getting the material.

Discussed Lewis dot structures, polarity, and molecular geometry. I think he understands the concepts well. However, sometimes he gets a little confused. He probably just needs more practice with the material.

Tutoring review by Molly in Santa Barbara, CA
Today we reviewed the SAT practice test that the student took. We went over each section and determined what areas we could focus on over the next few weeks. Her verbal sections were very strong, and her math scores were appropriate for her grade level. Our first area of focus will be the essay, then we will work on perspectives, author opinions, and bias in the reading sections. After that we will go onto the math sections, practicing with fractions, ratios, and percent, and focusing on creating equations from word problems.

Tutoring review by Daniel in Santa Barbara, CA
Met with the student to go over his group assignment as well as review some epidemiology concepts. I gave him pointers and directions to go with his research. I explained the Malaria epidemic and the interplay of sickle cell anemia alleles in certain populations. He found this very interesting and will potentially use it as a research topic. I also explained some statistical concepts like p-value, confidence interval, and the standard deviation. Despite not having a background in statistics the student was able to understand the concepts and felt more comfortable with the material afterward. I reviewed risk ratio and explained hazard ratios as well. After the session I think the student feels better about his assignment and his understanding of epidemiology. He grasped the ideas well and will be able to apply them to his research.
