We reviewed the student's homework, which covered antiderivatives and solving integrals using substitution. She picked it up really quickly, and after showing her a couple of strategies, she was pretty strong in the technique by the end of the hour. Overall, this has been the quickest I've seen her pick up a new topic, and she was thrilled to get a B on her last test.

The student's English class is reading and learning about the Victorian era. For his assignment, he outlined the Victorian era from his textbook while I guided him by asking questions to check for clarity. We also discussed possible reasons behind this new lifestyle and in what ways the Victorian morality pervades today's society.

We started with a concept review of what she was working on in biology - taxonomy, cells, and natural selection. We went through all of her notes and she understands all of the concepts well. We then went over her geometry quiz from last week and went through the areas where she struggled - if/then statements, mostly. Once we worked on those for a while, she was doing much better with them. We also worked on her lab report for biology, which was mostly her reading it to me, and me asking clarification on items that she then worked into her report.

The student and I went over a worksheet that dealt with factoring out 3rd, 4th, and 5th order polynomials. We figured out the possible roots and used synthetic division to find additional roots up until we were left with a quadratic. At this point we either factored it out or used the quadratic formula to find the roots. She was able to understand this process.

Today the student and I worked on his writing skills. We continued to work on identifying main and supporting ideas from passages and then he drafted his own paragraphs based on the notes we took together. He continues to grow stronger in his writing and his ability to read critically and restate important ideas in his own words. Next week we will continue with the writing practice, and also get back to covering some additional grammar basics.
