We finished our coverage of conics with a series of challenging word problems in her work packet and covered radians with a review of basic trigonometry. The word problems were very difficult for the student so when she got stuck I walked her through them and had her copy what I was doing. She picked up on radians very easily.

Today's session served as test prep for a test the student will have on Tuesday. We covered all aspects of evolution and went over a homework assignment. We covered many theories and concepts such as natural selection, variation, and passing of genes/traits to offspring. I went over some notes that I created for us to go over, and we also covered the relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration. This was quite a bit of material that can be difficult to master, but the student is a very smart young lady.

We reviewed the definition of derivatives, and then we found the derivative of polynomials and rational functions as well as the tangent lines of functions at certain points. She seems ready for the midterm on Thursday!

Today we prepared for the student's exam which is tomorrow and focused a lot on related rates for the first hour and half. We did most of the different types of related rates problems (triangles, volume, areas, angle changes, etc.) and we also did some from her practice problem set. We covered concepts she needed a brush up on and then ended the session with some log, e and ln practice. She seems ready for her test now. She was cooperative and polite.

Tutoring review by Christopher in Troy, NY
I gave Student 1 most of my attention today, and I saw some pretty significant improvement. The biggest area for concern will be his ability to set up problems correctly. This requires being able to identify every force involved in a problem and to set up Newton's second law correctly. This requires meticulous attention to detail as well as an ability to precisely distinguish between closely related concepts such as weight and mass. I was careful to indicate that m*a is not a force, which is a common misconception. As he had already finished the assignment, Student 2 seemed much better prepared. When I asked questions, he was usually ready with the right answer. We also discussed Newton's third law, which while not relevant to most calculation problems, can present some conceptual difficulties. This seemed to go rather well.
