Tonight we worked on taking notes for his World Studies class. We also talked about the plot for Animal Farm which is the next book he will be reading in his English Literature class.

Tutoring review by Laura in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL
I met with this student for the first time today - he was energetic and asked a lot of questions. I asked him what topics he wanted to go over and what subjects in school he was having trouble with. He said he sometimes has trouble in math because it is "complex." I asked him what he was learning in math, and he showed me his homework packet for this week involving time. He then explained that he had a state test coming up. I tried to gather as much information as I could from him about what specific subjects would be on the test, but he was unsure. In total, we went over some basics on fractions, multiplication, and division, and we practiced a few clock questions. He was at times a little fidgety and anxious for the time to be over, but he was pretty quickly redirected to the problems at hand.

Tutoring review by Alexandra in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL
The student and I spent today going through as many of her school assessment practice multiple choice problems as possible. I focused on encouraging her to pay attention to the details by asking her to think of a common mistake she might make on each of the problems we encountered. For example - on a problem that required she add or subtract numbers with decimals, she would have to make sure that she lined up her decimals. Additionally, I made a point of trying to get her to think about whether her answer made sense. For instance, if the question asks for you to divide 1/2 gallon into 5 bottles, should your answer be smaller or bigger than 1/2 gallon? That way, before she even solves the problem, she has a good idea that she is looking for a number smaller than 1/2. I noticed that she seemed to find the multi-step word problems the most difficult and so we spent some time practicing taking those problems step by step and identifying key words to help us solve. Since we did not make it through all of the problems, I encouraged her to email me with questions. I was happy to see that she took advantage of this option and I was able to clear up questions over one of the problems later that evening.

Tutoring review by Travis in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL
We worked on problems that the student missed previously from the algebra packet. We paid particular attention to inequalities and distribution of negative signs and finally fractions involving algebraic expressions. After we had exhausted this problem set, we moved on to additional algebra problems that I selected from an algebra text.

Tutoring review by Natalya in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL
During this tutoring session the student worked on her homework, which included using properties of parallelograms and midsegments of triangles. She showed good algebraic skills when she was solving homework problems (most of the problems required setting up an equation and solving it). It was my pleasure meeting this student. I am looking forward to our next session.

Tutoring review by Virginia in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL
In this lesson, the student and I covered the first three sections of his pre-algebra textbook. He had read two of the sections beforehand, which was very useful and gave him a good overview of what the section covered, but he still needed some help with the topics. We started with place values, both right and left of the decimal point. Next, he and I went over some other early topics. Most of the lesson was spent learning how to solve addition and subtraction equations in which only two of the three numbers were given. This is a very difficult topic for students, since it is essentially algebra, but he did very well. He stayed focused for most of the lesson and was very enthusiastic about solving the problems.
