Recent Suffolk County Tutoring Session Notes
Volume and surface area of cones and pyramids were today's topics and we had a good session breaking things down and helping her to see what formulas needed to be applied where. She has gotten better in just the past week. Some of the problems she attempted before I got there were partially correct with no supervision or direction which means pieces are starting to stick. We just need to bring the whole picture into focus for surface are and volume of various types of geometric solids. She adds to and uses the formula cheat sheet we created, so that seems to be an effective tool for her so far.

We covered calorimetry, enthalpy, and entropy. We did plenty of practice problems, and it seems like she understood very well. I hope she is able to retain the information, though. We have been covering a lot of information very quickly.

We went over the positive, comparative, and superlative forms of adverbs (plus irregular forms), double negatives, distinguishing between and adjective and adverb, and went over some poetry (rhyme scheme, stanzas, quatrains, etc.). I arrived there at 8pm and left at 9:30 pm tonight.

The student and I reviewed for her quiz the next day. We went through her review packet and discussed any questions she had on it. We then went through each section in the book and worked extra problems like those on the review.

We started by working on verbal reasoning. I brought test prep books and we went through several sections, practicing specific strategies which included mapping a passage, analyzing keywords, breaking down questions types and classic wrong answers and tackling questions via STPM method. We then practiced these strategies with several passages and spent between an 1 and 1.5 hours on the verbal reasoning section. We then focused on the Bio content the student felt the least comfortable with which included Embryonic Development, and the circulatory system.

Worked on math today. Covered numbers and operations and algebra. The student works well and did nicely on her homework. She has shown great improvement. Homework for this session: do practice test 1 math sections, again untimed. Next time I will assign a full timed practice test.
