Tutoring review by Vincent in Longmont, CO
The student had asked me to help her go through a review for an upcoming test over rational exponents. Though she had completed much of the review, she had told me that she was not sure exactly what a fractional exponent represented. I showed her the relationship between rational exponents and roots, both what she needed to do for the remainder of her assignment and why she had been working the previous problems the way she had. I used the remainder of our time to look over the answers she had written out before I had arrived, and found a couple that were incorrect. Since it was also a matter of factoring, I took some time to help her identify when removing the greatest common factor would help to simplify the process of solving these problems.

Tutoring review by Kristyn in Longmont, CO
This week the student is beginning polynomials. We reviewed how to categorize polynomials by degree and number of terms. We then moved on to adding and subtracting polynomials. He had little difficulty with this concept and was able to master distribution of the "minus" sign. We then did a brief overview of what different polynomial functions look like graphically. This was to give him a preview and reference. Lastly, we covered multiplication of two polynomials which included an introduction to "FOIL". I gave him 3 problems to work through during his sister's session. We reviewed and corrected the problems at the end of the session. The student's sister is working on exponential and logarithm transformations. She has a quiz tomorrow. She did well on her previous quiz scoring a 13/14. She had a great understanding of the graphical shifts, stretches, etc. She was confused with transforming logarithms containing additional components, ( y=4+log (x-2) ). I suggested she write out a base transformation both ways (y=log(x); 10^y=x) and use that for reference with the more complex problems. We also covered a quick review of natural logarithms and e^x. She seemed to have a much better mastery of the material at the end of the session.

Tutoring review by Shannon in Longmont, CO
Because the student just had his Chapter 6 Test last week, we started a new section (7.2) which focused on polygon similarity. We discussed his homework and the concepts for the section. He got the concept after some work and practice, and we went over some Theorems to be used in proofs over the course of the Chapter. He is happy about his grade on his last test which he said was almost a B-, which hopefully we can improve this chapter!

We covered ratios, ratio units, percentages, using percentages, proportions, cross-multiplication, and the areas for triangles and rectangles. The student is picking up on all the concepts quite well.

Tutoring review by Rasa in Longmont, CO
The student's confidence in math has improved greatly since I started working with her. After I showed her how to conceptually do a problem, she would rather work through problems on her own and not ask for help, and I mostly just pointed out small errors she made. We worked on her school iPad on the assessment webside doing multi-step word problems and volume geometry problems.

Tutoring review by Wanting in Longmont, CO
We covered tangent lines, chords, and arcs in the Circle Chapter. We started with concepts and responding theorems. Then we practiced related geometry questions. The student is proactive about learning. She sometimes may not able to find hidden information in the graph to solve problems. We drew a concept map to help her organize her geometric concepts. We proved the theorem in order to reinforce the learned knowledge. We will continue this circle chapter next session.
