Recent Ocean City Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Joseph in Ocean City, MD
The session began by quickly reviewing material that we covered during our previous session. The student mentioned that he received a 100 on both Chemistry quizzes he has taken since our last session. We reviewed some terms for his Chemistry test tomorrow, but then quickly transitioned to a reading passage he was assigned. He was required to read the text and then summarize it (giving setting, characters, problem, and resolution). He was also required to write 5 terms he did not know and then define them via context clues. In order to expedite the process, I read to the student and had him follow along with the text. We would discuss paragraphs and entire sections as I completed the reading. He was required to summarize the information as we went along. We would also discuss unfamiliar terms and ways to use the text surrounding an unfamiliar word to help define it. Halfway through the reading we began working on the summation of the text. He was able to recall the setting, characters, and their problem without difficulty. We discussed that even though we hadn't finished the text, we could write most of the paragraph required because we had been paying attention to the details as we read along. We ended the session by again reviewing materials that would be covered on his Chemistry test. I provided the student with a simple flow chart to help him remember unfamiliar Chemistry terms (e.g., sublimation, vaporization, etc.). This was a very productive session.

Today the student worked on adding and subtracting polynomials. This was good practice for the student. By the end, we was getting through the problems quickly!

The student and I worked on complex numbers- specifically calculating the trigonometric form, multiplying/dividing, and using powers. She needed a couple reminders as to how to solve the problem, but overall she did very well (hardly any errors and a good understanding of the concept behind each problem). We spent the last 30 minutes of the session reviewing her first unit. I had her take a practice quiz, and the majority of the problems she couldn't figure out how to solve. I encouraged her to take time to go back through her notes and complete the quiz, then we could go over the problems she was having the most difficulty with.

We prepared for the student's test on Modern Atomic Theory, which was the following day. We went over orbitals (what they are, what they look like, placement of electrons), electron configuration, periodic trends, concepts often tested via multiple choice questions, and tricky questions that may come up during the exam. The student seems to have a general understanding of the concepts. We fine-tuned her skills and built upon them. She should do well on her exam.
