The student and I worked on lessons on an app for about 40 minutes: 1 reading lesson on story vs. poetry (he was on the middle of this lesson when we started our session - scored a 61% and said he will re-take it); 2 math lessons on subtraction and multiplication (he scored a 91% and 96%). We then completed 5th/6th grade work that I uploaded: this worksheet involved finding the total area of a multi-layer irregular shape. This is a new concept to him, which he may see at the end of this year and definitely will see next year. He was very confused at first, but I worked out the first problem with him, and he caught on quickly. He successfully completed the second problem on his own. He bookmarked the website and is going to tell his dad about it - I told him he can choose 5th/6th grade problems from this website that we can work on in addition to his app (because he agrees he needs to be challenged more with his homework). I have also e-mailed his math teacher again for any enrichment material/areas she would like me to focus on.

The student did very well today. We mostly went over completing the square and quadratic equations. He tackled them with ease. His main challenge at this point is not a conceptual understanding, but simple mistakes made in computation, which we will work on alleviating.

We covered rationalization of polynomials, radicals and imaginary numbers. We are meeting Tuesday next week to review and do practice exercises for his next test the following day. The scope of subjects covered in class is close to overwhelming and stretching students endurance and patience but we shall conquer by practice, practice and more practice--and having challenging fun while doing it!

I started out by reiterating the importance of the student turning in his completed, or even partially completed work. Then, we worked on the next unit of his chemistry homework. We used the last 45 minutes to pick a monologue from Hamlet and work on him memorizing it.

We covered concepts on distribution, the associative property of addition and multiplication, multiplying and dividing by signed numbers, and PEMDAS. The student did not struggle with any concepts since this was just review for her. She only made simple mistakes when any negative numbers were present, but she caught her mistakes. I gave her about 15-20 homework problems per concept we went over. This session went very well.
