We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Tutoring review by Pieta in Brentwood, CA
The student is learning fractions in school. She understands the concept of fractions and can visualize equivalent fractions. With prompting, she got the answers. When we finished her homework (2 night's worth), we practiced some more on paper. Then we moved to Sunshine math and completed the 2nd page of a lesson we began last week. With the remaining time, we moved to multiplication and division problems.

The student and I reviewed his most recent material from his Algebra test, discussed his Algebra homework, and reviewed his Physics homework. He is doing really well in his Algebra class - he currently has a 96% - so much of our discussions are just to check his understanding. We discussed writing the sets of unions and intersections, identifying variables on a graph and relating the variables to each other on the graph, and drawing graphs based on given information. I explained that the independent and dependent variables are always given on the x- and y-axes, respectively, so if he is given a graph, he can immediately and easily identify the variables. In Physics, he recently took a test on acceleration and free fall, so we reviewed some of his questions that he could remember from the exam, as well as went over his homework, which covered vectors. Our next scheduled session is on October 19.

Tutoring review by Jacqueline in Brentwood, CA
The student was happy because she earned an A on her latest test. We decided to preview her next lesson. This involves the concept of Percent Greater Than 100%, and Percent Less Than 1%. I started by going over the examples in her book that explain the strategies and steps involved in solving the problems. She then tried to complete the first problem on her own with some difficulty. I had to explain to her that when a percent is less than 1%, you are working with tenth through thousandth. With guided practice, she worked through some more problems until she was comfortable with the material being covered, and she was able to complete a few more practice problems on her own. The student has shown improvement in focusing and grasping the content being covered.

Tutoring review by Colin in Brentwood, CA
We began this session by working on one of the student's worksheets on fitting polynomials to corresponding graphs and determining the scale factors. Afterward, we spent the remainder of the time practicing the topics that will be on her upcoming quiz, primarily long division and synthetic division of polynomials.

Tutoring review by Rona in Brentwood, CA
We covered naming of compounds, identifying anions and cations, Lewis structures, polarity, and molecule shapes. The student grew more confident in the material during the session and seemed more interested in the material compared to last week. I gave her some new strategies for determining how many electrons are transferred between anions and cations. She wants to practice the naming and bonding more before her exam on Friday, so I gave her a suggestion of how to create her own problems for herself to practice on. I will see the test grade at the next session. I think she will do well on the test, and she seemed motivated to push herself to do well.
