We worked on fluency, she read a book without stopping. She did a really good job reading, it wasn't choppy and she didn't have to stop and start. We will continue working on fluency as well as comprehension next time.

The student and I continued our work this week. We focused on oo, ee, and ing sounds. We did short words then worked up to sentences and passages. I left the student four books to read and practice with for the week.

Another great session with the student! Today we read the European folklore tale of William Tell. We focused on inferring things from reading the text. The student did the read aloud and then had to choose things from the story to infer 3 traits for each character. He also had to explain, with examples from the story, why he chose those traits. We finished by reading some poetry from A Light in the Attic.

Today the student and I worked on her writing journal for her next book report. This month's topic is science fiction and she chose the book 'Shanghaied to the Moon.' Much of work involved discussing the tropes of science fiction (invented words, space tropes, and general characterization) in order to better understand the story. She seems to be enjoying the book, and I think this will help her immensely. We also reviewed her math homework - in particular adding and subtracting compound fractions. She has a good grasp on the task, but could use additional practice of harder problems in order to secure better grades on her assignments.

Reading Tutoring review by Laura in Chesterfield
The student and I worked on his spelling words for school today and putting them into sentences more than seven words. He had a little trouble with the context of the word and where it fit in, so we talked about some of their definitions and the parts of speech that they were. Next, we continued our lesson from last week on words that sound and are spelled similarly, but have different meanings. I had him write out some sentences, and he did well on this for the most part, although more practice in future sessions won't hurt!
