We have changed our meeting time to Thursdays now because of our schedule. This time I brought in some of my own materials to use, instead of his textbook. He was reticent about taking Chinese next year, but says because of me he will register for Chinese and continue the challenge!

We reviewed old vocabulary and started the new dialogue (with new vocabulary, grammar, etc.). Had the student read and decipher on her own, with minor help from me. Practiced grammar structure and reading comprehension.

Today we learned directions in Chinese Mandarin. I started this new topic with a review since it has been a while since our last session. I had her review several vocabularies which are related to our new topic, transportation. She did a very good job that was beyond my expectation. Then we watched a video about giving and asking about directions. There are some new words for her to memorize and I showed her each direction with gestures so that she could get a visual idea about the directions. After we watched the video had almost mastered all six direction expressions and could make responses when I gave directions. We also played a game to show and practice giving directions. She showed her interested when we played the direction game.

The student said she had improved dramatically on her second paper quiz. But she still had hard time on oral quiz. She wanted me to ask questions according to her text and power point presentation in Chinese to help her familiarize the Chinese pronunciation. So today, we converse a lot. The student did a good job.

The student and I worked on the first chapter of her new textbook. While the chapter had vocabulary that she was already familiar with - it was an excellent way for her to practice them with new ideas. We went over the various ways to answer the main objectives/questions of the chapter. We also spoke briefly about debating in Mandarin and the various phrases to use.

Today we spoke 90% Chinese throughout the session! I helped the student finish her "act out" project. We recorded it a few times and practiced dialog with switching the roles. Then the rest of session we used the Q&A dialog to help her with listening and speaking. I used all the vocab and phrases of the week in our free dialog to let her get used to listening in different ways and expressing them as flexibly as she can. At the end, she became much more adaptable in her Q&A and became much faster in the project dialog! Good job!
