The student and I reviewed a few sentence correction questions from her first SC homework assignment. We then finished the SC topics of verbs, pronouns, and misplaced modifiers. Next session, we will pick up with comparisons and likely finish the SC issues.

Today was my first meeting with this student. Accordingly, we began by discussing her goals and her overall history with standardized tests. Before this lesson, she took a diagnostic test, scoring a 540. She's already reviewed the test, but brought the questions that she's still having trouble with, and we used those to diagnose her weak areas. It looks like in the short term we'll be focusing on exponent rules and other number properties related items. This coming week, she's going to do a couple of chapters of work in her lesson book and complete the pretest. She's also going to do 10-20 questions of each of the types in the guide book.

When we were doing a drill today, and the student missed the first few questions, but then he got the rest correct. He said that is often the case. In order to abate his anxiety, I recommended doing some practice problems before a test, to get the anxiety out of the way beforehand. We looked at boldface and flaw critical reasoning questions today - he did well with these. He is going to complete his practice test before our next session.

We went over coordinate geometry problems that the student had problems with. We also began Chapter 14 of her test prep book by covering mixture problems. I asked her to finish Chapter 14 and practice GMAT questions related to the topics in that chapter.

We reviewed 10 very difficult questions that the student answered incorrectly on her practice exam. She reported that she experienced an increase in her GMAT score on that practice exam. She has the potential to score high on this exam, because she is able to grasp the concepts and strategies employed to reach the correct solutions to those difficult questions. She may wish to practice exponents, proportions, ratios, and percents. I recommend taking quizzes based on topic areas before taking another practice exam.

For our first session, we went over the GMAT exam and discussed what the GMAT is trying to test. We then went over different areas of focus, particularly on the quantitative section. We reviewed formulas as well as properties of exponents, roots, and fractions.
