We again worked on math. Our first hour was spent reviewing permutations, combinations, and probability, but our second hour was spent on general GRE review. She seems to be making progress, but freezes up on questions that she could answer.

After reviewing homework, the students honed in on reading passage questions. They're going to focus on their specific weaknesses for our next session, and then should be ready to take the test! They were seeing steady improvement earlier and both should do great.

As this was the student's first tutoring session for the exam, we went over some problems together so I could get a sense of her strengths and weaknesses. She had taken a diagnostic practice test from her book. She got at 153 quant and 147 verbal. She is shooting for at least 63rd % tile on each section, and this is not outside the realm of possibility for her. I explained some strategies for studying vocab and recommended that she take a full-length practice test online for our next session. We spent most of the session reviewing geometry problems. She has a good foundation in math and excellent number sense, so we just had to review theorems/formulas/definitions and I helped her figure out when to apply them.

The bulk of our session was devoted to practicing Verbal strategies, for this is the students area of particular need. We divided that time between sentence completion and reading comprehension questions, with the latter most specifically focused on Main Idea, Inference, and Argument Questions. The final quarter of the session was devoted to geometry practice, as we adopted a Modeling. A guided practice approach to the problems that had given the student the most trouble. Overall, the student seems to have a solid grasp of core exam concepts and came into our session impressively well-prepared.

For this lesson, the student and I covered the essays he had written for the Analytical Writing portion of the test. We talked though how to improve them, structure them better, use better reasoning. We then talked through other potential topics and how to approach them. We ended with going over the data interpretation math questions, which the student has the most difficulty with. For the next class, he will take a complete practice test that we will go over.

We did a Geometry drill. The student is good at Geometry, and just needs to refresh her memory with all the rules.
