We worked on fraction algebra because the student seemed to struggle with that. We made sure to review simplifying fractions because that is what the majority of the problems require. I assigned her the Diagnostic 1 Tests for both math and writing before we meet again on Monday.

This session focused on evaluating trig identities, using the unit circle to evaluate 30/60/90 triangles, properties of 30./60/90 and 45/45/90 triangles, scientific notation, and interpreting word problems.

The student and I covered the English section in this session. We discussed how to maximize his score, and he is utilizing many of the skills that we have covered in previous sessions. He is catching on to what the ACT is testing, such as comma usage, redundancy, and conciseness. The student has great potential, and I am very eager to help him achieve his highest scores! We honed in on more questions regarding style and tone where he is learning to focus on keywords. We also discussed the ACT essay. We talked about the timing and what goes into a top-scoring essay. Next session, we will move onto the next practice test, starting with Reading.

We spent half the time on a very broad overview of English topics. The student is very confident in some areas, but struggles with grammar rules in others. We also focused on the Science section for the first time. The student had the most trouble with Chemistry-based questions. Next time, we will review more of the Science section (particularly Chemistry) and English questions as well.

We focused on Reading and English. For Reading, the student tried three passages with three different strategies. The first was reading the whole passage first and going back as necessary, the second was not reading it first and using more of a word-search and logic based approach to answering the questions, and the third was reading the first and last sentence of each paragraph. It ended up looking like strategy one was the most efficient, because it landed him a correct answer every 66 seconds. For English, he has no concerns of finishing in time. In fact, he even worked on slowing down a bit in order to read questions more carefully. We were able to go over the rules of semicolons and how they relate to colons and commas. A final note: I appreciate the student's positive attitude! Always willing to try different ideas to reach the same end. Great skill to have.

The student and I had a good session today. We reviewed her homework and went over the Unit Circle, SOHCAHTOA, and fractions. We then reviewed Rhetorical questions in the English section and worked through 2 additional Reading passages.
