I think that the student's strategy is improving. I was happy with her practice ACT from Saturday. I have assigned a reading and science section for next time.

Today, the student and I went through some math problems focused on topics that commonly appear on the ACT, then completed the science section of an old ACT test. The student appeared to be very comfortable with virtually all of the math we attempted, and was able to solve almost every problem quickly. His only concern should be making sure he remembers all the relevant formulas and equations, such as the distance and midpoint formulas. He also performed very well in science, finishing the entire section roughly within the time limit.

We began working on the ACT science section during our session today. We went over the three different types of passages that appear on the Science section and practiced a few of each. We also reviewed some concepts including dependent and independent variables, correlation, and different types of data representation. Next session we will continue with science practice.

The student and I spent more time today reflecting on the actual test and the writing portion of the test. We looked at a new ACT prompt and worked on ways to develop the fourth perspective and to connect it to the other ones. We also went through an actual test today after some review with questions and the student did very well at this, demonstrating a good thought process for the ACT.

I went over the general structure of the test, focusing on finding out where the student had the most trouble, and what he found easy and what he did or didn't understand well. We figured out that he had the most trouble with science and reading, so I went over the structure of the science test and the types of passages and questions, and we did some practice. He seemed much more comfortable with the test after getting over his intimidation (which is common when it comes to this section), and found answers fairly quickly and easily without errors. He also seems more confident about the test in general. I also went over the basic structure of the reading test and some strategies for tackling it efficiently, and gave him some practice from the ACT website for next time.

The student did really well today! We focused on math and science. The main thing she needs to work on is timing. The best thing for her to do now is practice, practice, practice! The more she does, the faster she will get. I also suggested practicing the sections giving herself even less time than she will have on test day. This will help her account for the inevitable slowing down that happens on test day. For the reading section, she should focus on passages that are social studies or natural science, as those were her more challenging areas on the April test. She is a great student, and it has been awesome working with her!
