English Tutoring review by Alison in San Marcos, TX
Per the student's request, we spent time today shaping and editing the material we had worked on together. The material has plenty of evidence and analysis, but needed to be molded into a more cohesive essay, as it was rather fragmented. Today, we got the material to a rough draft state; The student and I will work on polishing the draft to create the final paper tomorrow.

English Tutoring review by Whitney in San Marcos, TX
In this session the student and I worked on a creative writing piece that he is doing as a final paper for his English class. This essay is supposed to incorporate research details from historical sources. I pointed out areas where he could use better supporting details, which will help him to learn to recognize how to do this on his own in the future. In general, his writing skills have improved. His sentences and organization is much clearer. The next step is to work on vocabulary and making his sentences more dynamic.

The student has started a new online Health class which requires a good deal of writing. We went over a few of his entries. His writing is getting clearer. He has started to read Orwell's "1984" and was continuing to read Davis' "Life in the Iron Mills." While I was there he ordered Strunk & White's "Elements of Style," which might end up being very useful for him. I think he will continue to make rapid progress.

We covered vocabulary. The student has a good memory so he usually does well on vocab tests. I'm trying to help him truly learn the words and their meanings in a way he can retain them after the test. I have him write sentences and his own questions using the vocabulary so the lesson is not just memorization.

English Tutoring review by Anya in San Marcos, TX
During this session, we began to work on an essay for her Social Studies class based on the class book. Prior to our session, she was asked to pick one obstacle around which to focus her essay. She elected the lack of motivation some low-income workers develop due to mistreatment from their managers. She had selected two specific examples from the book to illustrate this obstacle. Together, we worked to craft a thesis statement from these examples and from her general, thematic ideas. I noticed that, since last year, her articulation of her ideas has greatly improved as has her ability to advocate for herself whenever she is confused. She has a much better sense of what skills she has begun to master and what skills she still needs to improve upon. After drafting a thesis statement, we began work on the body paragraphs. We agreed that she should finish her first body paragraph prior to our next session.
