I have lived in Texas all my life. I’ve moved from Houston to Austin and back again. I attended the University of Texas at Austin where I pursued a degree in sound engineering and recording technology with an emphasis in Pre-Med and Pre-Law. I plan on attending an institution where I can achieve a medical doctorate simultaneously with a degree in jurisdictional prudence.Five years at the UT has taught me how to take in complicated information, process it and teach it to fellow students. In a more professional atmosphere, I have helped students achieve their academic goals through tutoring on a high school level.That being said, there is a certain thrill that I have when I see someone comprehend a subject that was previously foreign to them. I have seen the look regarding subjects from an elementary level to a collegiate level. Regardless of what subject I am working with someone on, I will strive to make sure the student understands.Personally, I have an easily approachable personality. I’m friendly and easy for students and parents to get to know and trust. It’s difficult to teach someone unless there is a foundation of trust between the two parties and my disposition makes it easy to achieve that relationship.I have many hobbies. Primarily I love to practice my violin. I have been playing since I was two years old. My parents put a stick in one hand and a cardboard box in the other till I could handle the real thing. Other hobbies include fencing, reading, swimming and skiing.

Teaching is my passion. When I am not tutoring for Varsity Tutors, I work in medical research. I love the idea of helping patients feel better and especially kids. I graduated from Brigham Young University in 2009 with a BA in Visual Arts and a BS in Physiology and Developmental Biology with a minor in Chemistry. I tutored a variety of subjects and students during undergrad, most noticeably other undergrads in their advanced writing courses as a University Writing Fellow. I also tutored middle and high school students in their math, science, and English coursework, as well as providing ACT prep for them. Following my undergrad, I was accepted to Teach For America and trained and taught as an early elementary education teacher in all content areas for four years (while also teaching elementary visual arts in the fourth year). During this time, I was the primary first grade Math curriculum planner for my school, as well as a lead planner for first through second grade guided reading. While I can tutor a broad range of subjects and students, my absolute favorite subject to teach is English, including both Reading and Writing, mostly because I find this subject to just be so enjoyable. I believe in a more Socratic and investigative approach to teaching as I think that the deepest learning comes from answering guided questions and coming to one's own conclusions, then matching those conclusions to available standards and literature. I also believe in providing modes of concrete, pictorial, and abstract learning for every standard to truly solidify understanding for all learning styles. In my free time, I love visiting art galleries and I am currently working in a contemporary gallery as well! I also enjoy making art works and sitting back with a delicious new book.

In May 2014, I will be graduating from Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. I tutor biology and all of the standard chemistry courses (general, organic, physical, biochemistry), but organic chemistry and biochemistry are my favorite subjects to tutor. I worked for several years at Palm Beach State College as a supplemental instructor for organic chemistry, in addition to private tutoring. It's very rewarding for me to help students break down barriers which are based in fear and low self-confidence, and help them realize that they can indeed conquer these subjects, no matter how scary their reputation may be. In chemistry, it can be very tempting to rely too heavily on rote memorization, so I try to focus on developing a deep understanding of concepts in order to reduce the need for memorization.I also tutor Spanish, which has been a passion of mine for many years. I'm mostly self-taught and excited to help others learn from my own past mistakes. I recently spent 7 months studying in Spain, in a very small city where almost no one speaks English, which was simply a dream come true. The best advice I have for language learners is to step outside your comfort zone, and you'll be surprised how fast you'll catch on!I am passionate about traveling, experiencing new cultures, learning new languages and trying new food. I'm in the process of becoming ESL certified, and I've just begun to learn Arabic, which is proving to be an enjoyable, very challenging, hobby.
