Today, we began by going over our note cards. Then, the student and I read first on a level G, which she has mastered and then on a level H. On the latter level, with prompting, was able to sound out quite well. She needs to continue reading for a half an hour each day and we should reach our target of a level J, the end of first grade, by the first week of school at this rate.

In this session with the student, she and I read a Level 3 book about whales. Since she is used to reading fictional stories, reading a factual/scientific book was a new challenge. However, she demonstrated the same skills as with other Level 3 books, and she asked more pertinent questions than she had with any other book up to this point. She read just over 30 pages in an hour; each page contained about twice as much content as the other Level 3 books she had read.

We went over digraph sounds again by reading the book "Fox on Socks" and finding all the words that began with these digraphs. The student found this exercise very fun and started noticing some digraphs that were not in our practice sheet, I could tell that he was looking closer into the sounds of each word. We then read a Curious George story together. This last story was more challenging but he was very confident when reading it, trying very hard to say each word.

The student and I covered the use and identification of synonyms, antonyms, and homophones. We then practiced the use of decoding skills to unscramble multi-syllabic new words and sound out words that are complex in their use of the vowels. Then, we worked on decoding and identifying the sounds in the beginning and end of various words, writing those sounds based on the letters that they use, and then various levels of rhyming practice.

The student worked on reading skills and choosing the correct words to complete sentences. She performed fairly well with this activity but needs some reinforcement with word choice of the same word when there are different tenses to select. I also gave her a writing activity where she had to read words and categorize them based on topics. I have recently noted that she has a difficult time distinguishing between the sounds of v and r, which affects her reading and comprehension of some words. I spoke with her mom about this and she will also practice with her. The student worked on recognizing consonant sounds and rhyming sounds as well as identifying words and pictures that were different from the rest. He struggled a bit with these activities but seemed to improve as we did more of them.
