We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

We caught up on most of the material today.  We didn't do many new problems but hopefully when we meet tomorrow we can finish getting caught up.  The student understands physics well when we go through it as long as he checks his understanding at each step.  Hopefully tomorrow will round him out and he will have a good understand of all the material up to date.

We reviewed thoroughly the first 2 chapters of vocabulary and basic grammatical structures that flow from conversations (describing people, asking where they are from, talking about how someone is, etc.)  We also learned (for the first time) and memorized counting to 100.  The student was very patient with himself.

I first worked with Student 1 and we reviewed linear systems, and using elimination and substitution to solve.  I had him graph the equations and make a guess before he did the algebra.  Also we reviewed inequalities as that is the next concept for school. Next I worked with Student 2 on AP Calculus.  We reviewed for a test definite and indefinite integrals, and the trapezoid rule and Riemann.

Tutoring review by Rachel in Santa Monica, CA
This was our first session covering the English section. The students didn't yet read through the chapters that discuss the material covered on the test, so I told them that after a couple sessions we'll come back to that and see if they need to read them. If it seems like they're struggling in one area in particular I'll have them read through the appropriate sections. We went over the answers they answered incorrectly on the PR English test, and consulted the back of the book if the answer wasn't immediately obvious or was based on a rule with which we weren't familiar. The students did well on the test. After we went through about half the test, the correct answers were more obvious to them, as they were making a lot of the same mistakes. We started the second practice English test, and since they've started school already I just asked them to finish the test for homework.

The student and I went over the different parts of the assessment test and what it covers.  We discovered that she needs to study all the sections of the book.   In order to adequately prepare she will need to some work on her own. She said her strength is Language Arts and her weakness is Mathematics.  Therefore, she will begin doing 2 Language Arts chapters a week on her own.  If she has questions, we will go over them and review the material.  When in a session we will focus on the mathematics portion - especially decimals, percents, and Algebra.  This time we reviewed basic operations, fractions, and changing a fraction into a decimal and a percent.  She needs to practice multiplying and dividing fractions.  We will continue working on percents and decimals next time.

The student has been doing wonderfully!  She got a 100 on her PreCal unit circle quiz, and got the best grade she's had on a Physics test all year on her last Physics test over energy and work.  Today we reviewed her workbook for her Physics test tomorrow on momentum and change in kinetic energy.  We also spent half an hour on transformations of the sine and cosine function graphs.
