I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Learning a language can be difficult, I know. I've tutored many students and saw the difficulty they had trying to learn another language; whether it was a requirement or just for fun. English was not the first language I learned. I knew Portuguese first as that was the only language spoken in my home. However, I was fortunate enough that I was very young and was able to pick up on English that I do not have an accent and that many people assume English is my first language. Having English as a second language inspired me to attend University and obtain my bachelor's degree in Portuguese with a minor in Spanish. As I was studying for my bachelor's degree, I earned certificates in medical interpretation in Portuguese and Spanish. As I worked in the work-study program in the University's foreign language lab I noticed the number of students that would come for assistance with foreign language classes was indescribable. I wanted to make their life as easy as possible while being able to assist them in learning the language itself.

Hobbies

I love reading, playing video games and watching tv/films. My book collection is vast, over 2,000 in my Kindle & over 1,000 in print. My collection is mostly in English, but does include some books in Portuguese and in Spanish. Nintendo is my all time favorite for consoles. I own at least some version or remade version of ALMOST all the consoles (Mario Kart & Paper Mario games are my favorite) . I also have the remade Sega Genesis and Sega Genesis Portable. Both have pre-installed games, however, the Genesis also has a cartridge space which allowed me to play a couple of the old games from the original Sega Genesis (I loved being Simba and jumping on the giraffe heads & using the monkeys to help swing me through the trees). I also have a PS5 & an Xbox Series X. I'm still getting used to those as all I've had are Nintendo consoles or Sega (which has the same controller configuration). Lastly, my taste in tv & film can be a bit eclectic. I love rom como, mystery and suspense, however, I also really enjoy foreign films and tv series. My favorite channels are Discovery ID and the Weather Channel (lots of really good tv shows on there if you haven't tuned in). 'Cinema Paradiso,' 'Antonia's Line' and 'Waking Ned Devine' are my top three foreign films, but the tv series are different. 'Go, Go, Squid' (not the same thing as squid games), 'What's Wrong With Secretary Kim?' and 'An Incurable Case of Love' are the series that have me hooked and are my favorites. From movies to tv series the language (or locations) are as follows (as listed by the order listed above): Italian, Dutch, Ireland/UK, Chinese, South Korean and Japanese. There are so many wonderful things to watch, why just stick to one language. I hope you'll now be as interested in meeting me as I am in meeting you after you've gotten to know a little bit about me and what I like.
