What is your teaching philosophy?
Learning is a habit.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would start by asking the student which questions were giving them trouble.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I would encourage the student to work through examples that they were unsure of.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Have the student try some easy problems first.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Walk through some examples.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Ask them to interpret each sentence after they read it and point out any words they don't understand.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Ask the student what they need assistance with and give them some easy examples to start.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Try to think of some real world examples where the material is applied.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Ask them questions as I work through an example and ask them the next step in the solution process.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
You build their confidence by helping them break the problem into pieces and take steps toward a solution.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Ask them questions, and watch how they work through a problem.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I give them several problems of varying difficulty and see how much they are able to do.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
The student's textbook and notes are a good place to start, but the actual homework is the best way to see how they are doing.
