Recent Oshawa SAT Subject Test in Spanish Tutoring Session Notes
The student has improved quite a bit on her reading and science, scoring 28s on both of those. She still needs to work on grounding her answers in the material, but I'm happy with her progress thus far. We started in on math topics today, covering some trig basics, general equations, and some topics that she had forgotten long ago. She enjoys math, so with a little more work on the material, I think she should be good to go.
I gave the student a bunch of English practice questions and then started with her on the reading section. We discussed test-taking strategies for the reading section, and I gave her sample reading passages and questions.
The student's latest practice test showed a general improvement in scores, although she did score lower on the reading section than expected. Today we talked about strategies for the reading section, how to deal with test anxiety, and covered more grammar principles. I was surprised at the level of anxiety she talked about having during the practice test; she seemed very thrown off by the timed aspect and the pressure. We will work more on practice small, timed sections and practicing techniques to help her work through the anxiety during the test. Overall, she seems to be getting the new material and working well.
The student and I went through a reading comprehension practice section together. He got every question right. He used some great strategies. For example, he predicted words for the sentence completion questions before looking at the answer choices. He is starting with relatively high scores, so I recommended a book for advanced students. I'll bring him a copy to the next session. It will be a great tool to use in conjunction with the book he already has, which has 12 full-length practice tests. I asked him to complete an essay, a verbal section, and a math section for homework. I'm looking forward to the next session.
In our session today we focused primarily on the reading and writing sections of the assessment because this is where most of the student struggle. At the start of the session I handed back the essays the boys wrote last week with comments and suggestions for them to read over later. Everyone did remarkably well on the writing section, especially student A. He answered nearly every question correctly. Students B and C also showed marked improvement in this section. The reading was a bit more challenging, especially for students B and C. However, student B was very articulate in his reasoning for his answers, which shows that he has the capability of thinking through answers and now has to focus on choosing the best choice. Although student D is quieter during our sessions, he also did a good job explaining some of his correct answers, particularly in the reading section.
We spent the whole session going over geometry questions. She knew she needed more practice with geometry, and she did have trouble with some of the questions although they were more difficult than the geometry questions on the actual exam, in my opinion.
