Windsor Linguistics Tutoring FAQ
Linguistics is the scientific study of language and its structure, including the study of morphology, syntax, phonetics, and semantics. It can be a challenging course that systematizes and decontextualizes familiar elements of language, often making them seem very unfamiliar. The subject can become overwhelming very quickly, especially if you are suddenly required to discuss aspects of the language that you have never considered in their own right before, like verb transitivity. In linguistics, transitivity is a property of verbs that determines if a verb can take direct objects and how many objects a verb can take.
What effect does verb transitivity have on the workings of the English language as a whole? These are the sorts of questions that linguistics courses will ask. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with premier one-on-one linguistics tutoring available in many locations across the country -- and online -- to help you sort through your most taxing worries in the subject. Allow the tutor's exemplary grades, knowledge, experience, and professionalism in their linguistics courses to attest to their familiarity with the subject. Our educational directors will help you connect with a tutor who best suits your particular academic situation, learning style, level of understanding, and level of experience with the material. This individualized learning allows you to start working effectively with him or her right away.
Every student has different concerns in linguistics, and your class curriculum may stress certain aspects of the subject more than others. Your tutor can design a lesson plan that's specific to your needs and concerns to make your linguistics tutoring as efficient, rewarding, and enriching as possible. Whether you are encountering difficulties conceptualizing the difference between syntax and semantics, forgetting what makes a grammar rule prescriptive or descriptive, or you simply find yourself intellectually entangled in the intricacies of parse trees, your tutor is there to help. So that you learn the maximum material, you do not need to review concepts you already understand as you have fully grasped this content. However, you are free to move on to new concepts and theories as soon as you feel you have mastered the content at hand.
Furthermore, your linguistics tutor can customize your tutoring sessions to be as convenient as possible for you, and they are willing to work around your schedule. These tutors know that you are busy and have other commitments, so they can come to whatever location you decide is most convenient. Sessions can be held at your home, at a branch of your local library, at your favorite coffee shop or cafe, or even online. You can also schedule sessions to take place when it is best for you and at the frequency you desire. Do you only need help studying for your linguistics final exam? You can receive tutoring aimed at helping you to be fully prepared. Do you find your upper-level linguistics course in semantics confusing? Do you feel you could use help throughout the semester? You can receive tutoring as often as you would like to prevent yourself from falling behind.
Do not make your linguistics class more difficult than it needs to be by struggling through it alone. Your tutor is able to meet you where you are, adapt to your pace of learning, and help you master all your most difficult concepts and coursework. Call Varsity Tutors today and let our educational directors help you connect with a world-class linguistics tutor who can help you learn this complex but fascinating material! Upon the completion of your tutoring sessions, perhaps you will appreciate, understand, and love the essence of linguistics all the more.

Recent Windsor Linguistics Tutoring Session Notes
Before we started this class, we had a little quiz on the vocabulary we have covered in last few classes. The student studied a lot at home. Thus I asked him to memorize just one page at one time and we will test it again next class. Then I introduced different sentence types, such as questions and negations, we will finish the sentences next class, then the rest of the time we will intensively practice what we have learned in class.
The student has a test tomorrow, so we went over the vocabulary for the test by playing Simon Says and practicing having conversations. He did really well and is well prepared for his test. I also went over the etymology of some of the characters to help him develop tricks for memorizing the characters. We talked about the three functions that a radical can play in a character (tell you what it sounds like, tell you what it means, do nothing) and practiced identifying the parts of characters.
The main two phrases we learned of today were "different" and "same". We learned different colors, different numbers, different animals and different shapes. We used different color to draw same animals on the paper and we used same colors to draw different shapes on the paper. A series of drawing activities like these gave us opportunities to say them in Chinese again and again. The student is smart and has an amazing memory.
Today we went through two sets of vocabulary from the student's school work, one was about the animals and the other was from previous vocabulary for reviewing. He learned and memorized the animals vocabulary very well and also we practiced the adjective, cute, by telling which animals were cute or not. And I also explained three characters that look alike as he couldn't differentiate them at the beginning.
The student learned a new lesson today, and she did really well. She did 65% of the reading on her own as well as she learned to write a few new Chinese characters.
The student and I went over the previous session's dialogue on date and time, and then we went over a new dialogue involving hobbies. We also reviewed basic sentence structures and various modifications of sentence structure, and we practiced a few grammar drills.
