Windsor Journalism Tutoring FAQ
According to Merriam-Webster, journalism is the activity or job of collecting, writing, and editing news stories for newspapers, magazines, television, or radio. Although the field of journalism is undergoing significant changes, as the industry shifts from a predominantly print-based form to one of digital media, it is still as relevant as ever. Blogs, the use of social media, and videography are now the most popular, effective, and accessible forms of news writing and reporting.
For many students studying journalism, such changes signal a challenging, ever-shifting curriculum that requires students to retain complete awareness of the profession and its characteristics. If you are one such student, and if you find this environment confusing or overwhelming, Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a journalism tutor. Many tutors are professionals and may complete freelance journalism work on the side, giving you the opportunity to get inside tips and strategies that have paid off in the past. Do you have a question about journalism ethics? Do you find yourself puzzled by multimedia reporting? Why not ask knowledgeable tutors with real-life experience?

Recent Windsor Journalism Tutoring Session Notes
Yesterday, the student and I took a brief hiatus from essay planning in order to prepare for her (more imminent) examination on "Of Mice and Men." The teacher stated that test would be comprised of four types of questions: multiple choice, quotation ID's, short answer, and cause and effect. We discussed strategies for how to approach each type of question, and we decided how she could best divide her time when it came to the actual test taking. We took several online practice tests together in preparation for the multiple choice, after which I selected passages (at random) from the book, asking her to identify speaker, context, and overall significance. We spoke at length about how to incorporate larger themes of isolation and loneliness (which she is writing her essay on) into the open-response format questions.
The student had begun working on essay ideas with regards to how the student approached them in his thesis. He then selected two chapters from which he felt he could draw the most evidence of that thesis. We also constructed an outline with three main points, which he was then able to flesh out with evidence from his selected chapters. These measures provided a space for the students non-linear thinking to operate before beginning the linear process of writing his essay.
We studied for the student's upcoming test on Jane Eyre. On her last English test (on Emma), she had the most trouble with questions about minor characters and details, so we focused on understanding the role that each minor character played in the book and connecting them to the book's themes. In order to understand some of them, I drew a family tree to clarify Jane's relations with the aunts, uncles and cousins. We ended by reviewing the minor settings in the book.
The student is applying to a summer creative writing workshop so we researched their website and chose a writing sample for him to include with the application. He will also have to write a personal essay, but will not know the writing prompt until this week, so we plan to work on the essay at the next meeting. We also discussed theme, characterization, and finding specific supporting details in The Giver, which he is reading in class.
Today's session was productive with the student. We reviewed his homework assignments to clear up any questions he may have had. He's improving a lot, which is great for me to see. I will be giving him more English worksheet practices. Our next session will also be a quiz day for his vocabulary words.
The student and I worked on her thesis statement, authorial context, and audience commentary for her in class essay on Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Her teacher is very specific regarding how she would like the essay to be composed and will allow the class to bring in a sheet of notes. We selected solid quotes and provided in depth analysis so she will be very prepared. She earned a 92 on the last paper and I am very proud of her :)
