Quebec City Fiction Writing Tutoring FAQ
Fiction writing may seem like something someone either can or cannot do. A writer is born, not made, or so the thinking goes. Anyone who has ever taken a course in fiction writing knows that there are many things that can be done to improve one's creative writing, however. Brainstorming can be learned, vocabulary can be improved, and characterizations can be refined. And those are all related to the prose itself, never mind refining a piece's plot or story development. No one wakes up one morning with the ability to write a brilliant novel; one must instead develop his or her skills consistently and with the right tools.
You should not give up on writing fiction just because you are struggling in one creative writing course. Writer's block often happens because fiction writing can be quite difficult, and a fiction writing program is built around finding those tools and strategies that allow you to get past writer's block. If you cannot handle all of those tools and strategies, then you will have difficulty on your journey to becoming a successful writer. Falling behind on those seemingly tedious homework assignments can mean you do not develop all of the skills necessary for a fiction writer.
If you are someone who is struggling to write fiction, or you would like some extra assistance in perfecting your craft, then contact Varsity Tutors and ask for us to help you find an experienced tutor in your area. We are excited to help you connect with a personal fiction writing tutor, anywhere in the country, who can help you develop key writing skills through one-on-one instruction. Tutors are fiction writers and are familiar with all of the little exercises and processes you run into during your writing course. They have the kind of experience that can help you develop your fiction writing abilities. More than fellow writers, instructors are experienced educators, people who love working with students more than anything else. Your tutor's ultimate goal is helping you improve your ability to write great fiction, and they can thus use an approach that is crafted especially for you, based on what you need to work on to do better in your class or bolster your weakest skills.
Fiction writing tutoring sessions are conducted in a one-on-one environment, with just you and your tutor working on your particular strengths and weaknesses. Your tutoring can begin with an assessment, so your tutor can figure out exactly what you need to work on in your fiction writing tutoring. If you can craft a beautiful sentence with gorgeous prose, but struggle once you reach more than a page of writing, you can work with your tutor on plot and character developments. By contrast, if you have great story ideas with robust characters, but struggle turning a phrase, you can have your tutor focus on your prose. Your tutor can help you with your fiction writing no matter what facets of it that you struggle with.
When you supplement your classroom lectures with private lessons, you benefit from the guidance and wisdom of an experienced professional. Not only does your tutor care about your academic goals and needs, but they are also able to accommodate your busy schedule. You are in control of when and where you would like to study, and are able to meet for lessons in the comfort of your own home, your favorite coffee shop, or anywhere else around your neighborhood. Furthermore, if you would prefer to not study in-person, simply request that your tutor conduct face-to-face online lessons with you.
Working with a superb tutor can help you gain the skills and knowledge you need to improve your fiction writing. Contact Varsity Tutors today for more information about how we can help you connect with a tutor!

Recent Quebec City Fiction Writing Tutoring Session Notes
Today the student and I completely finished his compare/contrast essay. He did really well on it, and I feel like he'll get a good grade on it! We also looked at the topic of his next essay, which is a persuasive essay, and we started brainstorming for that. We will continue with 12th grade English next time.
We began by reviewing the grammar workbook pages that I had assigned for homework, which tested their use of the verb 'to be', then we went over the pages on present- and past-tense verbs. The boys are better grasping the concepts of subject and conjugating verbs. I began teaching them about helping verbs and main verbs, which we will continue in the next lesson.
We spent most of the time going over vocabulary. I threw in some part of speech practice to help her find the correct words to fill in the blanks. She also completed a Spanish assignment, and we started revising a high school entrance essay.
Topics: vowels, common vs proper nouns, opposites and definitions of words.
Progress: This session was mostly successful. He performed mostly very well on the different assignments. I would like him to improve his penmanship, in the long run, writing legibly will have huge benefits -- many of which are probably intangible. I will emphasize this next week if we are doing a writing-intensive assignment. I was glad that the student did not have a lot of distracting items with him at this session. He was actually very interested in reading a book, instead of doing the homework. I think this is a good sign.
The student and I reviewed for his language arts test. We discussed parts of speech, direct and indirect objects, synonyms, antonyms, and vocabulary. We also briefly reviewed the comprehension section of the book. While working on parts of speech, the student specifically addressed prepositions, adjectives, conjunctions, and interjections. He also wrote synonyms and antonyms for all of his vocabulary words.
Reviewed and went over simple, loose, and periodic sentences using parallel structure; completed homework assignment re: same. Math topics covering domain, range, vertical and horizontal line tests, and the use of symbols. Chemistry topics including periodic trends, electron configurations, and groups.
