Halifax CAHSEE Tutoring FAQ
The California High School Exit Exam, or CAHSEE, marks an important step in a student's progress toward graduation. Unlike other exams that are used to illuminate academic weaknesses or mark preparedness for advanced coursework, the CAHSEE serves the singular purpose of determining whether or not your student possesses the skill level necessary for leaving high school with a diploma. A passing score on the statewide exam is a prerequisite to receiving a diploma from any public high school, making it possibly the most important test that your child takes during their high school experience. While this may sound intimidating, any student can perform well on the CAHSEE with the proper preparation. For some, the rigor of standard high school coursework will be adequate, but for those hoping to go above and beyond the skills taught in the classroom, or who are concerned that traditional schooling has not prepared them to excel on test day, outside assistance can be hard to find. The CAHSEE tutoring options available are one of only a few resources your child can use to prepare for the exam on their own time.
CAHSEE tutors strive to make the material as accessible as possible, to give your student the best chance of success on this important test of their academic acuity. Your child is likely to first encounter the CAHSEE during their second year of high school education. The exam is structured to test the material covered up to this level, encompassing reading comprehension, compositional skills, and basic arithmetic skills that would usually be covered in coursework between eighth grade and tenth grade. Should your student not initially pass the exam during tenth grade, they can retake it during senior year.
No matter your student's year in high school, it is important to be prepared for this exam when it is administered. A private tutor can help your child become familiar with the exam's question formats and standard types of problems, equipping them with strategies and techniques that can help them approach even questions that they are unsure of the correct answer. Private CAHSEE tutoring is custom tailored to each student. If you child requires more help in the English section, their instructor can help bolster their literary analysis skills to boost reading comprehension. Meanwhile, if you find yourself struggling in the Mathematics section, your child's tutor can develop a series of lessons to touch on the fundamental quantitative topics covered on the CAHSEE. By keeping lessons targeted to the individual student, CAHSEE tutoring can be extremely focused and efficient. You may find yourself surprised at how quickly your child can develop their skill set when presented with the opportunity to learn in a one-on-one environment.
In addition to their extensive experience in teaching the exam, which they have taken themselves, your child's tutor is very flexible. They know how busy and pressured your student is at this stage. Preparatory classes may help, but their times and places are rigid, plus many students must be accommodated. A tutor's focus is on your child only, so any questions are welcome, and sessions can be set between or after classes, or on weekends, at the best place your student is most comfortable. This can be at home, a library, or other space that's non-intimidating. In addition, the Varsity Tutors live learning platform allows your child to meet with a private tutor either in person or face-to-face online. This gives them the flexibility to meet with their tutor at the time and location of your choice. Your child's current skills will be assessed, and then tracked with assignments along the way so every lesson can be tailored to the subject that needs most attention. In due time, your child will improve their chances of showing their true potential.

Recent Halifax CAHSEE Tutoring Session Notes
We went over the last full test she took, in which she did very well. We analyzed her essay. I encouraged her to have more specific detail and go one step further in her analysis.
We reviewed math on her test as well as a harder path review post. We talked about eliminating answer choices as an important tool.
Today we began talking about the types of questions on the response to literature section. The student read and answered questions for 5 or 6 reading passages. We then discussed the various genres of literature he might expect to run into, and identified each. We spent the second hour preparing for the essay. We practiced exposition, persuasive, narrative, and literary analysis. For each, we prepped a 5-paragraph essay. The student prepared a thesis, hook, examples, and a strategy for writing. I think he is ready for the test!
Today the student and I continued working through her math packet to prepare for the state test. She's continuing to gain confidence and to apply herself more fully to the problems she is working on. She understands all of the concepts that the questions ask about. She's getting better at this, so we'll continue to work on it.
We reviewed geometry as well as data/statistical analysis. The student is improving on analyzing and solving her problems, but she still needs to memorize basic formulas if she intends to excel. The student takes the High School Graduation Test next week.
The student and I began this tutoring session by reviewing some of the additional math sample questions found in the Study Guide. Following this review, he completed all the additional math sample questions in the study guide book. He is beginning to make steady and consistent improvement in his practice test scores. He went on to finish his third English Practice Exam. To finish today's tutoring session, he started his second Math Practice Test!
This was our last session before the student's exam. We reviewed a past test and covered the different equations that he would be able to use on the test. We believe that he will do much better than the last time and pass the test. The next step will be receiving the results back and prepping for the next step.
