Today we continued to look over past tests. We reviewed the ones he missed and discussed reasons for the errors. He likes to work out the problems in his head without fully showing his work. I am continuing to stress the importance of showing your work to avoid mistakes. He is very intelligent and has a firm grasp of many of the principles he is studying.

We focused mostly on geometry today, though we did go through converting within the SI unit prefixes. We reviewed much of the algebra that the student's class is touching on such as graphing in the xy-plane, solving an equation, and the properties of addition and multiplication. He did well remembering graphing and solving equations and only needed a few reminders on how to solve inequalities. He couldn't remember the names of the properties for addition and multiplication even though he could describe or use the different properties, so we went through each of the properties. Lastly, we talked a little about area and perimeter/ circumference as well as the number pi and multiplying with units. Since he has a geometry quiz coming up after our next session, we will be focusing on that rather than physics next time.

The student had a longer form writing assignment due on Monday, which he had gotten about halfway through. We used this as a tool to discuss readers. I gave him three concepts to work with while he did the second half of his assignment: slow the reader down, make sure the reader is not confused, and keep the reader interested. We went over breaking up sentences, using punctuation to slow down the reading pace, and recombining thoughts and ideas to make them more readable. I had him read his sentences out loud, and I think that really helped him grasp the concepts we were working on. He did get the overarching concepts, and he's starting to get the specifics a bit better, but we need to work on elevating the specifics to a more conceptual framework.

In this session, we reviewed the integration by substitution, integration by parts, and separable differential equations. The student improved his understanding on these topics and could do some separable differential equations. I hope he now knows that he can skip the integration by substitution method when du = a constant--that will make his work more efficient. I believe he will do well.
