My passion for teaching began in the middle of my high school career when I first started tutoring my peer in math. She was struggling in Pre-Calculus, and I decided to help her (obviously, not out of self-interest ). As I began my tutoring sessions, my passion for teaching began to grow since I really liked seeing my students understand and interpret difficult concepts and incorporate them as one of their own. After seeing this happen multiple times, their joy became mine, and I wanted to spread the joy of learning to other people as well. I know that learning can be difficult and hard at times, but with a friend or a mentor to guide you, it can lessen that load and make this journey more bearable and even rewarding at times. To explain a little bit about myself, I graduated from Pensacola Christian Academy and went straight into Birmingham-Southern College, which is a small liberal arts college located in the town of Birmingham, Alabama. Because of my high score on my SAT and my status as an international student, I received a full-tuition scholarship that was exclusively meant for international students, and after spending one year as a freshman, I got into a position of a Resident Advisor and basically got myself into a full-ride scholarship with no fees to worry about (scholarship paid for full tuition, my position as an RA paid for room & board, and my work-study position paid for all extra fees). After four years at BSC, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science with a physics major and a mathematics minor. I tutor all math-related subjects (arithmetic, algebra, pre-calculus, calculus, and some higher mathematics courses), but I especially enjoy teaching pre-calculus and college-level calculus since I had the most experience tutoring in those two subjects. I think my teaching philosophy is to connect with my student first, and then try to figure out what problems they are facing so that they can understand and overcome the obstacle that lies ahead. Since I know that all people think differently and in their own style, I will match my teaching style to yours, and I will do my best to work alongside you to figure out what is the best solution to solve your particular problem.

I have enjoyed tutoring students for over 40 years. I remember my first student was the 7 grade daughter of the college librarian where I work at as an undergraduate at the University of North Alabama. I tutored her in math. I tutored numerous nursing students in chemistry while at graduate school at Vanderbilt University in Nashville where I received my PhD in 1985. I tutored students in science and math during my career as an industrial water treatment chemist. Upon retiring, I decided to continue tutoring part time as it still continues to bring me so much joy to help others suceed in their academic pursuits. I am the chemistry tutor at the tutor center at our local community college.

I graduated with a BA in Politics and a BA in Anthropology from NYU in 2022. I also hold a MS in Biomedical Anthropology and a Graduate Certificate in Forensic Health and Nursing from SUNY Binghamton (graduated May 2024). I have worked in education, with a previous position with America Reads/America Counts teaching elementary students in the NYC public school system. My previous virtual tutoring experience was with Curious Cardinals, where I had tutored high school students with the following: forensic science, biology (anatomy, genetics), SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, ACT English and ACT Reading. I have experience working in forensic science policy at the Innocence Project, which is an organization focused on exonerating individuals who were wrongfully convicted of crime. In this role, I have written testimonials, case reports, and research articles on forensic identification methods and their legal, ethical, political, and privacy implications in casework. I have also worked in the forensic science sector as a Criminalist II at the NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). In this position, I assisted medical examiners (forensic pathologists) in the positive identification of deceased individuals throughout New York City. I also assisted in missing persons inquiries that were brought to the agency. Recently, I completed a research project in Vitoria de Santo Antao and Recife (both in the state of Pernambuco, in northeast Brazil) as a Fulbright Grantee. My research focused on osteology, forensic anthropology, and forensic genetics. My project involved metric analyses of bones combined with analyzing genetic information from DNA taken from bones. Currently, I am a doctoral student of Biological Sciences - Genetics at the University of Sao Paulo (USP). As a doctoral student, my dissertation project is expanding on the research I did with the Fulbright grant and is based on the central question/problem: What is the evolutionary relationship between skeletal morphology (primarily size), external pigmentation (i.e., skin, hair), and the presence of vitamin D deficiencies (which are indicated by the presence of skeletal lesions and decreased bone mineral density)? My favorite subjects in school were biology and anatomy, U.S. history, statistics, pre-algebra and algebra I, language and literature. I also partook in concert band and orchestra both in high school and in college. I am excited to share my skills and knowledge in these subjects with you, as well!

Human life is messy and complicated and challenging and very, very beautiful. Whatever its specific focus is at a given time, I think studying philosophy can and should ultimately serve developing the courage and capacity to embrace this beautiful mess. It's a privilege to be able to help people take this task on. I have been doing that for 8 years at the University level and am excited to do so now through online tutoring.

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Mobile's 88 schools and all 5 school districts with personalized tutoring. Whether your student attends a school in Mobile County, Baldwin County, or any of the other districts serving the area, we can match them with a tutor who understands local curriculum standards and school expectations.
Tutors work with students on Alabama's College and Career Readiness Standards, which guide instruction across Mobile's schools. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction helps students strengthen foundational skills and tackle grade-level content at their own pace—especially valuable in a district with a 17.6:1 student-teacher ratio where classroom time is limited.
Mobile students frequently seek help with math (especially algebra and geometry), English language arts, and test prep for the ACT and SAT. Science and foreign language support are also popular, particularly as students approach high school transitions and college preparation. Tutors can address specific gaps your student is facing in any subject.
The first session is focused on understanding your student's goals, learning style, and current challenges. The tutor will assess where your student stands academically, discuss what they're working on in their Mobile school classes, and create a personalized plan for the sessions ahead. It's a chance to build rapport and set clear expectations for progress.
