Fractions, ratios, and proportional reasoning are where a lot of math confidence either solidifies or cracks. Mustafa started tutoring students as young as five and has spent years watching exactly where middle schoolers get stuck — whether it's converting between decimals and percents or setting up their first multi-step word problems. He builds each concept visually and step-by-step so nothing feels like a mystery.

As a former IB student, my love for knowledge runs deep. I majored in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, graduating in December 2015 with honors (BME honors and Science and Technology Honors program) and going on to earn a Master's degree in Management Information Systems from the same university in 2019. I am currently pursuing a Master of Engineering in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from the University of Illinois at Chicago and hope to start a career in data science and analytics. I greatly enjoy helping others learn and tutored throughout high school and college; I love seeing the light flash on in a student's eyes when they finally understand something they had been struggling with or when they easily solve a problem. I have tutored both young children as well as high school and college students, in just about every subject. I particularly enjoy language tutoring; I am fluent in Arabic and French and I love literature and poetry. I also love to tutor math and science subjects. My tutoring style is very much student-first; I listen and observe to determine the best approach for each individual student and what methods or strategies will be most helpful for you specifically. I am not averse to making a fool of myself with song or dance if it will help! I enjoy what I do and I want the students I work with to enjoy learning as well.
The jump from fifth-grade math to middle school math introduces ratios, proportional reasoning, and negative numbers all in a short window. Darcey is patient with the conceptual leaps that trip students up and uses concrete examples — like wildlife population ratios from her own fieldwork — to make abstract ideas tangible.
The jump from elementary math to middle school math means juggling ratios, proportions, and introductory geometry all at once. Daniel keeps each topic grounded in practical scenarios — splitting a bill, scaling a recipe, measuring a room — so the reasoning clicks before the formulas pile up.
Until about age 16, Viktor thought math was a boring exercise in memorizing formulas — which means he understands exactly how a middle schooler feels staring down fractions, ratios, or integer operations. What changed his mind was a teacher who showed him why the rules work, and that's the approach he brings to every session. He unpacks each concept so students carry understanding forward instead of forgetting everything after the test.
From ratios and proportions to basic geometry and early equation-solving, middle school math covers a huge range of skills in a short time. Erika's approach is to identify exactly where a student's understanding breaks down — whether it's fractions, decimals, or translating word problems into expressions — and rebuild confidence from that specific point. Rated 5.0 by students.
Ratios, proportions, and pre-algebraic thinking click faster when students can see them — and Mimi's background in visual and object-based learning means she naturally turns abstract middle school math concepts into something concrete. Her Harvard Ed.M. trained her to design lessons around how each learner actually thinks, not just how the textbook is organized.
Economics majors spend their days building models out of exactly the kind of math middle schoolers are learning — graphing relationships, manipulating equations, interpreting data — so Mackenzie can show students where skills like proportional reasoning and solving for unknowns actually lead. Her 35 ACT score speaks to rock-solid fundamentals, and she's particularly effective at helping kids organize their scratch work so careless mistakes stop eating into their grades. Rated 4.8 by students.
Ratios, proportions, basic geometry, and early equation-solving can feel abstract to a middle schooler without the right context. Aimee pulls from her engineering training to turn these topics into tangible problems — calculating rocket fuel ratios or scaling a bridge model — so the math clicks instead of feeling like busywork.
Sixth and seventh graders often don't realize that the ratios, proportions, and basic geometry they're learning now are the scaffolding for every math class that follows. Margaret makes those connections explicit — showing a student why cross-multiplication works, for instance, instead of just drilling the procedure. Her psychology background informs how she adapts explanations to match the way each student actually processes new ideas.
The middle school math years — ratios, proportions, integer operations, intro to linear equations — set the trajectory for everything that comes after. Sugi approaches these topics by building the reasoning behind each procedure, so a student doesn't just cross-multiply but understands why it works. Rated 5.0 by her students, she keeps sessions structured without making them feel like a lecture.
As a biomedical engineering major at Brown, Phillip uses middle school math concepts — ratios, proportions, basic statistics — in his coursework daily, which means he can answer the classic 'when will I ever use this?' question with real examples. He's especially effective at building the problem-solving habits that carry students through pre-algebra and into high school math.
Scoring a 35 ACT and 1570 SAT means Amber has the quantitative chops to teach middle school math cold, but her theater background is what makes her especially effective — she knows how to read an audience, adjust on the fly, and make a concept land. She zeroes in on the specific spot where a student's understanding breaks down, whether that's negative number operations or setting up basic equations, and rebuilds from there. Rated 5.0 by students.
Every middle school math struggle Julia sees — whether it's proportional reasoning, integer operations, or early equation-solving — comes down to a gap in conceptual understanding that got papered over with memorized steps. She pinpoints that gap quickly and rebuilds the reasoning behind it using questions that get students thinking out loud. Rated 4.8 by families she's worked with.
Kerry's productivity coaching business is built on executive functioning — breaking big tasks into steps, managing attention, staying motivated through frustration — which is exactly what middle schoolers need when math shifts from straightforward arithmetic into multi-step problems with integers and basic variables. Her psychology training at Cornell and William James College also means she recognizes when test anxiety or attention difficulties are the real barrier, not the math itself. That combination of academic coaching and psychological insight makes her especially effective with students who have the ability but can't seem to show it on paper.
