Session Summaries by English Tutors

Sammamish, WA English tutoring
Today our first session, and it went really well! We met for an hour today and will meet for an hour this Thursday. We looked at his homework together, specifically his spelling and reading homework. He had a double-sided worksheet going over how to use suffixes. We went over past and present tense and the importance of consonants and vowels when changing the endings of verbs to -ed, -ing, -able, etc. and in doing so, we discussed the differences between adjectives, nouns, and verbs. We then created sentences using words with suffixes and went over what those sentences meant. In future sessions, I hope to work on building his confidence with reading and writing so that we can work on reading comprehension strategies!

Yesterday, was my first day working with the student. I completed a sight word assessment with him on the Dolch sight word list 3- 7. We later worked on suffixes at the ends of the word, specifically focusing on -ed and -ly endings. We worked on reading fluency, as well as comprehension.

The student is improving and gaining in confidence. Her focus towards the end of the lesson is still an issue. We worked on practice with phonics of word parts to get closer to being able to read without sounding out. I asked her to begin a reading log, reading 20 minutes per day. She is supposed to be reading 20 minutes for class anyway, so now she will just be keeping track of minutes read and pages read as well so we can see if her speed improves. I also asked her to write a quick couple sentences on what she read to see how she is processing the material. Her parents informed me that her teacher is saying homework is a problem so we will be working on that together beginning next week. Overall, I feel this student just needs to practice more outside of school and build her confidence and she will soon be caught up with her peers. Also, tricks to manage her body movements while studying could help her focus. Cheesy as it may sound, meditation has helped a lot of students with this.

In this session, we dealt with the letters B and C. We reviewed A and J, which we had previously studied. We worked with numbers 1-10, shapes, colors, and concepts of near and far, wet and dry, in and out, etc. The student has a great attitude. She quickly recognized the letters and shapes we had already studied.

In this session, we had test practice using the process of elimination. I left a writing prompt (short response) question for the student to write a paragraph for me to review and edit. The student earned a 96 score, answering 24 correct questions out of 25 total questions asked. The student continues to be eager to learn and was using material at the 10th-grade level. She is ready to continue to work towards her end goal and prepare for her final in January.

In this session, we mostly covered the lesson 9 evaluation for the student's course, with a short detour to look at one question from a previous assignment. Lesson 9 will mostly involve memorization, so I sent her several charts with relevant information. She is feeling optimistic about her final, and has made good grades on her last few assignments. She is always prepared with any questions she has been mulling over, and is certainly a very determined student!
