Education is the most important pursuit a person can have in today's society. From high school diplomas and college degrees, to technical schools and trade skills, having marketable knowledge and the training to use it is a key difference between success and failure in life. I am an avid proponent of education, which is why after graduating college with a bachelor's degree in mathematics, I have continued to teach and tutor many subjects within the field. Every student needs a unique learning experience, which I provide every time to the best of my abilities. From one-on-thirty classroom environments, to one-on-one private tutoring sessions, I have taught math at the elementary and college levels, and many subjects in-between, and am always excited for the opportunity to have new teaching experiences.

I have a BA in Math from Wittenberg University and a Masters in Applied Statistics from the University of Alabama. I have been tutoring part-time for 8 years in Austin, TX and now here in Denver. I tutor the following subjects: algebra, discrete/finite math, geometry, and statistics (business, psych).My approach is to tutoring is about one thing: relatability. I really try to understand the student's issues and identify with them. This puts the student in a comfortable place, where no question feels like a dumb question. I am currently a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin majoring in business. I went to Friendswood High School and graduated #3 in my class of 545 students. My hobbies include basketball (huge Rockets fan), music, as well as playing with my two dogs. My strongest teaching subjects would be those that are math related, such as algebra and calculus. Macroeconomics is also one of my strengths, as I took the AP class for it in high school and am focusing on business in college. After a successful career at McIntosh High School in Peachtree City, GA, I matriculated to the University of Georgia. Seeking a degree in Neuroscience, I am working my way to med-school and a bright future. Active in both the Honors program and Center for Undergraduate Research, I have developed a great work ethic which I hope to impart to my students! I've spent the past two summers teaching private swim lessons to children and adults throughout my community. Turning a person's goal into reality is the greatest thrill I've known! Similarly, I spent two semesters as a mentor at the Thomas Lay After-School Program in Athens, GA. There, I both tutored and befriended the children of the program. My favorite memory occurred during mandatory reading hours. A stubborn, apathetic boy refused to read any books. Rather than becoming frustrated, I asked him "If you could be any animal, what would you be?" I knew the library had a large section of zoology books, and hoped to pique his interest. Immediately, he responded "A fish!" The following weeks were filled with shark, octopus, and whale books. To this day, his transformation from disinterested to engaged and motivated fuels my desire to mentor today's youth.

My reason for tutoring stems from my passion for learning and the desire to communicate what I've found in a way that my students will not only understand, but enjoy. This passion has led me to have a strong command of the English language in all its forms, including the reading of literature and poetry, writing academic essays, a knowledge of grammar, and other linguistic elements such as phonetics to help with teaching pronunciation. Professionally, I've been an English educator for the past 6 years, teaching everything from beginning ESL to college-level argumentative writing. My students have ranged in age from middle school students to adults. My credentials include being a certified ESL instructor, a trained and experienced middle/high school language arts professional, and an adjunct professor of writing at Southern Connecticut State University.

My earliest childhood memory is in a classroom in Germany. I started school overseas on an Army base and I remember feeling fascinated with my surroundings. New books, new people, toys, paper and crayons were all within my grasp and sweet faced old woman was standing in front of the room excited to equip me with the knowledge of how to proceed. I loved school and academia since then and gravitated towards the sciences around middle school. I knew from early on that I wanted to become a physician but I also knew that I additionally wanted to continue to pass the information that I learned on. See one, do one, teach one has become of my favorite mantras.In teaching students I believe in using real world applications to excite the audience about the material they are getting ready to learn. I believe the first 10 minutes of every lecture is the most crucial and typically start off with a problem/quiz that will relate to the information of the day to captivate the classroom. Interaction is a key to learning. I attempt to personalize it at every opportunity hoping that students realize that sitting back and passively absorbing knowledge is not an option or a key ingredient in the recipe for success.Another important aspect to teaching is incorporating methods that apply to all different learning styles. Realizing that students are diverse and you are constantly speaking to a mix of auditory, visual or tactile learners is important and should be noted with every lesson plan. The beauty of science is that the topic can be manipulated to accommodate all styles and promote knowledge.Ultimately, my goal is to give someone the same sense of wonder that so many excellent professors have done for me over the years. To quote Socrates "I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think" and hopefully as an adjunct professor that is exactly what I will do.
