As a professional homemaker with free time the idea of helping students achieve their academic goals appeals to me. I have extensive knowledge of biology; specifically biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology, as well as a good understanding of chemistry, history, and mathematics. My hobbies include reading and writing, animal care (I have a pet dog), hiking and fitness. Growing up with three younger siblings has given me the life experience necessary to understand and relate to younger generations.I also understand the concerns of parents as I'm friends with many who have small children, and can relate to their concerns and experience while diplomatically explaining how best each particular child can achieve academic success.

Tutoring like teaching is more of an art than a science. Each student is different and their needs are different. I know this very well because prior to business school I taught high school students for three years. Students need an individualized plan that will help them improve when they are struggling or help them excel when they are succeeding. I personally have written hundreds of personalized academic plans for students and will be happy to create one for your child, so that they can excel. There are two main reasons why students are not academically successful. First, students do not have the fundamental skills to understand the content they are being taught. This can range from students having reading deficiencies to students not having basic math skills. The second reason students have issues is because they are bored with the content and choose not to study. These students are capable of completing assignments, but they are not invested in the work. As your child's tutor, I figure out which issue (knowledge deficiencies or investment problems) is hurting his/her success and then create a personalized plan for him/her!I am originally from Cincinnati, OH and am the oldest of six siblings. I attended Walnut Hills High School which is ranked in the top 100 public high schools before receiving a full ride scholarship to The Ohio State University. At OSU, I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Entrepreneurship. After tutoring and mentoring students during college, I decided to join Teach for America and give a few years of my time and energy to educating Atlanta youths. I taught high school physical science, physics, and chemistry. I enjoyed helping students become excited about science and pushing them to excel so much that I earned my Masters of Arts in Secondary Teaching also. Now I am at The University of Pennsylvania, The Wharton School obtaining my MBA.In my free time, I enjoy working out, playing basketball, going to movies, and going to concerts. Life can't be all work and no play, so I try to have a good mix of both! Hopefully we can start working together and you can get to know me better.

I have experience teaching K-8, high school and college-age math and science. This includes Algebra 1 and 2, Earth, Physical (chem) and Life Science, Genetics, Nutrition, Biology, Microbiology and more. I have also tutored students preparing for college and graduate preparatory exams. I have spent the past year lecturing college Microbiology and the previous 2 years teaching math and science at the middle school level; last summer I worked at a Pre-K/daycare center. I have tutored countless biological subjects in college and graduate school. I received my B.S. in Environmental Biology from the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in New York and my M.S. in Environmental Systems (Engineering) from The University of California- Merced. I tutor all ages and sub-topics within the realm of science, as well as middle school math. I have experience working with students of varying abilities and I'm skilled at assessing needs, deficiencies, and meeting students where they're at. Being in academia for the majority of my life, I know what concepts are important for students to understand not only for academic success, but for genuine understanding of subject matter and future use.

A good teacher - in my opinion - is one that develops a sensitivity to the joy that comes with learning. That joy - much the same in the processes that bring joy of games - is to be found everywhere in the nature of the human brain; a living computer; a vast of potential of weighted logic gates which give rise to the substance of what we call learning when we - by our activities - so organize them.Even the most bizarre or inspired art - so I attest - comes from the negotiation and change of this substance of our minds, and there is real joy in that!

My belief is that everyone is capable of success and finding a way to bring out excitement for a subject in which you struggle is the best way to inspire a student to learn. Everyone has their own learning style and finding that style is the greatest key to success.

In 2013, I graduated magna cum laude from Berry College with a Bachelor of Science Honors (BSH) in Anthropology with minors in both biology and Chemistry. I also hold a Master’s of Science (MSc) in Forensic Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. My dissertation research focused on finding a way to determine skeletal age at death from the microstructure of the human rib. I plan to attend medical school in the future in the hopes of becoming a forensic pathologist.I have worked both formally and informally as a teacher and tutor since 2010. While at Berry College I served as the Teaching Assistant for both General and Organic Chemistry for two and a half years. In this position, I taught students lab techniques and supervised the laboratory portion of the courses. I was also president of the Honors Student Union, and helped to implement a volunteer tutoring program that served underprivileged students in the local community. Since graduating from Berry College, I have been active in tutoring peers (both at the undergraduate and graduate level) as well as younger students in a variety of subjects including biology, chemistry, physics and math. I also specialize in improving academic essays and writing skills with students for whom English is a second language.

I set high expectations for students and encourage them to reach their full potential! I look for ways to engage students in activities that appeal to their multiple intelligences and make them excited about learning - I am always excited about learning and love to share that positive attitude toward lessons and assignments! It is important to me as a teacher to value my student's input. There must be an opportunity for them to ask questions that support their learning. Not only does this allow my students to demonstrate metacognition, but they can continuously reflect on how they can improve. This is crucial when a student is studying a topic they have little interest in and have met with little success. I understand that my role as their teacher is to look for ways for them to improve - and that's when I share all the tools and tricks learned over 16 years in the classroom and 7 years as a tutor! No two students learn in the same way. It is my job as a professional to engage that student's spark of curiosity which will lead to a lifelong love of learning!

I have a AS degree in Mathematics and a BS degree in Biochemistry from Stony Brook University. I am an aspiring physician who recently took the MCAT. I have been a tutor for six years. I have tutored high school and college students in subjects including chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics (from pre algebra to differential equations). I have also worked at Stony Brook University as a college biology lecturer. I like to use a hands on approach to tutoring rather than just lecturing, although I find it best to adapt my methods to the learning style of each individual student.I love to dance, especially ballet. I also love to learn new languages. Currently, I am continuing my studies of Spanish, and learning American Sign Language. I would like to become fluent in French and Mandarin Chinese in the future.I absolutely love teaching and would love to help out anyway I can!

About Me and Tutoring PhilosophyI graduated from the University of Kansas with bachelor's degrees in accounting and finance and also hold a master's degree in computational finance from American University. After finishing my education, I spent 5 years in the Navy on active duty. Always a lifelong learner, I am presently working on a certificate in computer science and a Master's in Data Science/Business Analytics. With over 9 years of tutoring experience, I am passionate about working with all students, especially those needing assistance in finance, accounting, mathematics, and computer science/programming courses because these subjects present so many opportunities for problem solving and students to obtain that "aha" moment. That said, I am qualified and willing to help you reach success in all the subjects in which I am approved to tutor.I started tutoring classmates informally while in college and accepted several teaching assistant positions that enabled me to clearly explain course concepts to students with various backgrounds. Instead of lecturing students, I subscribe to a learn by doing method that enables students to articulate core concepts in their own words after hearing an explanation and always provide guidance that aid in understanding. Each of us has a different way of absorbing new ideas and frameworks, and to be aware of those critical differences in learning styles is tantamount to your success. In some rigorous coursework, it can be so tempting to give up and settle for a grade that does not reflect your true potential. However, with the right attitude and patience, you will be on the fast track to getting the most value out of a class because I am willing to go to great lengths to ensure my students have the resources and training to succeed.

Every truth has four corners: as a teacher I give you one corner, and it is for you to find the other three.-ConfuciusAs a tutor it is my goal to not only teach my students the material they need to learn, but to better their core understanding of a subject and their methods of learning for the future. This way, they can continue to learn at an advanced level long after they no longer require the service of a tutor.
