Pasadena, CA Math tutoring
The student has two review sheets to help her prepare for the exam on Wednesday. Some of the problems she has done on her own and some we did together. I randomly picked a dozen or so problems from these sheets and had her attempt them on her own. She did extremely well completing all but a couple correctly on her own. After looking at her work, I found that the ones she did not do correctly she made small math errors on but has a very solid understanding of how to step through the process. I believe she is in a very good position to do well on the exam.

Today, the student and I went over her homework, which asked her to line up numbers from greatest to least as well as graph certain inequalities. The student struggled with organizing numbers with decimals and negative numbers, so we spent the last half of our session covering those topics. We drew number lines to prove that -2 is less than -1, and then used colored pencils to keep track of each decimal place when comparing four different numbers. I explained that to find the order of negative decimals from least to greatest, she could set aside the negative for a moment and organize the numbers from greatest to least. From there, she could add negative signs to each number. This made things a lot easier for her.

The student's class went on to integration, the reverse process of differentiation. He was solving the problems slowly, which is expected as integration is much more difficult than differentiation is. I could see him having no problems applying the knowledge, so I showed him several advanced tricks that was taught at school. He learned them.

Today we reviewed the test that the student took this past Tuesday. We reviewed how to graph parabolas, square-root functions, and absolute value functions. She has 100% more confidence, and is definitely performing better (on her review and practice problems). Like last session, I had her take notes, and write "recipes" to solving problems so that she can understand how to approach problems on her test.

We continued in the placement exam book focusing on ratios and solving word problems using ratios. This was a much harder skill for the student to remember but she did finally catch on. We played some more of the math game we had started.
