I wish to carry on the legacy of the many great teachers that equipped my mind to discern greater truth for itself by aiming to pass on my passion and love of learning to as many students as possible. With that said, the greatest reward of my classical education has been not what I have learned but how it made me feel and where that feeling has lead me to a more complete and fulfilling existence.Within the context of the rapidly changing modern world, many lessons of the past are being foolishly forgotten that can serve us genuine good. Among the worst of such losses is, in my opinion, the richness of our connections to each other and to our world at large. However, what is remembered upon reading the classics is that the human mind creates its own posture, for the ancients were as brilliant as us but in different ways. They lived lives with the same fears and ambitions that drive us today and the same capacity for emotion and intelligence. If I can teach students to understand this more fully, I believe they may become better humans within our society and develop a heightened sensitivity to each other that will further their own learning

While teaching 8th grade Math at a Baltimore City Public School, I had to meet my students at a wide range of Math abilities. Some students, who had fallen behind in previous years of Math instruction, had trouble with adding and subtracting. Conversely, some of my students were ready to explore each topic beyond what was prescribed in the 8th grade curriculum. This meant that I developed the ability to both reteach lower level skills, as well as push advanced students to higher levels of rigor. More broadly, I understand that Math can be incredibly frustrating, and I made it a point to be very clear in my instruction. I also believe that students will shut down if the instructor neglects to encourage them positively. Being positive and remaining calm helped my students during moments of frustration. I never ridiculed my students for lacking prior knowledge, rather, I worked hard to make them feel comfortable enough to share their math weaknesses with me, so we could move towards comprehension. I don't think all students learn the same way, therefore, explaining concepts using several methods is essential for those students who aren't getting it. For example, my visual learners benefited from learning addition and subtracting with negative numbers by utilizing a number line and different colored counter chips.I am currently seeking a Masters Degree in Economic Policy Analysis at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Through my teaching experience, and my current degree program, I enjoy tutoring Mathematics and both Micro and Macroeconomic topics. On the weekends, I referee youth soccer games in Maryland, and enjoy watch professional soccer games on TV. Soccer has been a passion of mine since childhood, and while I'm not as fast as I used to be, I play in an adult league and enjoy playing in an occasional pick up game. My undergraduate degree from Wheaton College (MA) was in Political Science, and I double minored in mathematics and Economics. I try to read the Baltimore Sun newspaper daily, as well as various news outlets on a wide variety of topics to stay current on world and local events. I enjoy listening to podcasts of political, economic and other interesting topics during my commute to my classes at UMBC. I have Graduate Research Assistantship at the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, through my degree program at UMBC. I realize I listed some serious hobbies, but I promise I have a sense of humor too! When time permits, I enjoy watching the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, because it's important to laugh every day!

I have always been extremely appreciative of the immeasurable impact that my teachers and professors have made on my academic, professional, and personal life. As an educator, I hope to accomplish and achieve the same type of positive impact on my students. I believe that the knowledge I have acquired through my education in China, my time at SUNY Geneseo as an Accounting major, as well as my professional experience in the Finance industry allowed me to become a fluent Mandarin speaker and writer, and also to have formed a solid knowledge base in Financial Accounting, Economics, Math, and Professional Writing, all of which are subjects I wish to teach. Over the past few years, I have worked with both college students as well as a young child. I served as a mentor and tutor to Financial Accounting students while I was still in college myself, I prepared fellow students for exams, and assisted with completion of assignments and longer term projects. I've also enjoyed working with a young child in Mandarin Chinese. I aim to always create interesting and engaging curricula to encourage the student to develop and exercise speaking, listening, and simple reading skills, at the same time encourage and cultivate a passion and curiosity for the Chinese culture. Through my experiences, I have developed great tutoring approaches, to always allow students to express themselves and to always facilitate hard work and thorough understanding of subject matters. I not only want to help students get high scores, but also for them to be able to think critically, logically, and analytically. Outside of my academic and professional life, I enjoy film, poetry, books, art, and food.

I graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2013 with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting. My interests in Math and Business growing up (and being a 3rd generation accountant!), led me to pursue my degree. The R.H. Smith School of Business at UMD has a nationally accredited accounting program. To obtain my degree, I was required to prove mastery of math through Calculus I, Accounting through advanced topics, and at least an intermediate knowledge of Economics.Immediately after graduating, I began working at a public accounting firm, within walking distance of DC, specializing in auditing. My position brought me to clients all around the Northeast, from local DC businesses to multi-billion dollar organizations.I am currently the guitar instructor and co-owner of a private music lesson studio. I love teaching and hope to assist students with Math and Business related subjects through Varsity Tutors!

I'm a PhD Candidate at Texas A&M University, Department of Agricultural Economics. I'm expected to complete my doctoral degree in August 2022. In the beginning of doctoral journey I acted as a teaching assistant, teaching small groups, grading papers, and providing office hours. At the beginning of 2020 I was given the opportunity to act as primary instructor of a course - and taught AGEC 317 (introductory stats/regression analysis) to students for five semesters. This included sudden adjustments to my curriculum due to COVID-19 and University Regulations.I believe a core element of teaching is being engaging. Students who care, learn. Tutoring will offer me opportunities to ask students what interests them and analyze results based on those examples.

I believe that everyone can learn and it should be a rewarding and enjoyable pursuit. Learning is a matter of translating interests into motivation, and through this understanding. I grew up as an Army brat, which afforded me the opportunity to live in many places growing up, including Germany, Texas, Colorado, New York, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. I attended Carleton College, in Northfield, MN, where I graduated with a dual BA in Economics and Political Science. Carleton offered a strong program in liberal arts and I was exposed to subjects in all major academic fields. I further increased my knowledge by taking science courses at the University of Wisconsin in Oshkosh. I also studied economics at Cambridge University. Before moving to Arizona, I worked as a consult with Global Collect in San Francisco, where I gained experience in global economics and international payments, and have worked in multiple financial tech startups.I recently received my MA from the University of Arizona in Government and Public Policy. During my studies at Arizona, I presented lectures at several international conferences in political science and international relations. While attending graduate school at the University of Arizona, I worked as a teacher's assistant and was responsible for providing individual feedback to over 100 students. I found it rewarding to work with my students so they could achieve their maximum potential. Presently, I am working on some coding projects, primarily in the Ruby-on-Rails environment, a language that I am currently brushing up on.I believe in a collaborative approach to learning, working with students to inspire in them a genuine thirst for knowledge. While I particularly enjoy tutoring in government and public policy, I also enjoy subjects as diverse as chemistry, biology, mathematics, economics, literature, and geology. In my off time, I enjoy downhill skiing, cooking, hiking, reading, and games. I especially enjoy games that stimulate your knowledge and test your strategic skills, such as Settlers of Cataan and strategy games in general both in the videogame and board game variety. And, of course, having lived in Wisconsin near Green Bay, about thirty minutes from Lambeau, I am, of course, a Packers fan.
