I have taught courses in American history and Western Civilization at Arizona State University, Scottsdale Community College, Chandler-Gilbert Community College. In addition, I have taught courses in the history of the American Southwest, Native American history, and American Indian studies. I have tutored students in English as a Second Language, reading comprehension, and essay writing.I use various types of information technology for class sessions, projects, and assignments. I have used both Blackboard and Canvas for my courses in conjunction with other online applications. I blend technology and traditional methods of instruction in my courses. I have worked in various capacities outside of the academic setting, and I utilize my experiences as an example how historical knowledge and methods are applicable outside of the classroom.I strive to show how topics relate to current events and stress the "cause-and-effect" aspects in history to show how history is relevant. I demonstrate how what occurred impacts people on a personal level with emphases on adaptability and continuity. Another of my goals is developing students critical thinking, writing, research, and collaborative working skills. I emphasize that materials presented in class are a starting point in seeking knowledge, not the final word.I view teaching as a major method for people to enrich their lives and broaden their views, in addition to their career preparation. I enjoy teaching and see it as a profession that is always evolving when it comes to the use of technology. I encourage visits to museums, heritage sites, guest lectures, and cultural events. I feel students can conceptualize what is being taught in the classroom through interaction. Students themselves are an invaluable resource in teaching each other. I approach every term as a learning experience for myself as well as my students, and encourage students to relate experiences relative to class topics. This gives students more confidence, encourages dialogue, and shows that the conveyance of ideas is not one way. However, my job does not end with class. I have encouraged and mentored students from various backgrounds in my career. It is greatly satisfying when they come to me requesting letters of recommendation to a program, law school, graduate school, a scholarship, or a job posting. It is gratifying seeing students apply what they learned to further their endeavors and enrich their lives.

Hello, my name is Jake Bohler and I'm excited to be a mentor! I graduated from St. Olaf College (a small college in Minnesota) and then taught middle school and high school social studies for six years. During my last two years, I started an AP US History course, which was the most rewarding course I had the opportunity to teach! Although I still enjoyed teaching, I wanted to continue to challenge myself so I started my own landscaping company. I still enjoy working with students, so I decided to mentor during the landscaping offseason!

As a tutor, my goal is to enable kids to become stellar students by demystifying the writing process. From mastering basic study skills to writing a killer college application essay, I want students to feel confident with their ability to communicate ideas effectively. My experience as a tutor, mentor and editor has provided me with the opportunity to help a variety of students, from kindergarteners just learning to read, to high school seniors writing the essays that will gain them access to top-tier universities. In my years as a teacher's assistant for college freshmen, a workshop teacher at 826 Chicago and a literacy tutor with at-risk kids in a low-income elementary school in Ohio, I have turned students who professed to hate Reading and Writing into confident and creative writers. I have also helped students excel in History, Mathematics and particularly enjoy helping students exceed their own scoring expectations on the SAT.As a graduate of the Oberlin College Creative Writing Program, I believe that every writing assignment, from historical essays to Japanese poetry to science term papers, has the possibility to enthrall and fascinate. I believe that all writing is creative writing, and that in every assignment can be approached with equal measures of enthusiasm and diligence. I am an excellent teacher of the building blocks of language, including Phonics and Grammar. As Joan Didion once said, "Grammar is a piano I play by ear." I have helped dozens of students view grammar not as a stifling set of rules but instead, a toolbox for self-expression.I look forward to working with you soon!

I have a PhD (Yale) in history and an MBA (UCLA) in finance. I have excellent writing and research skills, and have made extensive use of German and French -- spoken and for research. My work in finance has required skills with mathematics. I have taught university classes in finance and international economics. Another area of much interest, related to my background in history and public policy, is US constitutional law. I published a book on monetary history (*Gold, France, and the Great Depression*) , and a more recent book of essays on topics in economics and diplomatic history (http://books.ksplibrary.org/978-625-7501-75-0/ ) .... I have worked extensively on government-related projects, often in the greater Middle East. Effective tutoring should do more than impart techniques -- it should certainly do that -- it should help a student come away with some interest in and enthusiasm for the topic. (Soft evidence for the last is that my daughter earned a PhD in neuro-science, and credits me with inspiring her.)

Teaching is great responsibility and any good teacher will tell you that. I grew up around Boston and this is where I call home. I have been teaching for 11 years now and I have extensive tutoring experience. I received my Master's Degree in 2012 from American International College and I am MA State certified in Moderate Special Needs, English and History. I received my BA in Liberal Studies from Westfield State University in 1997 and my 2nd BA in Philosophy from D'Youville College in 2003. As a Special Needs Teacher I plan meaningful lessons based on students' goals, objectives, grade level benchmarks, and common core objectives. I try to cater to the different learning styles of my students. I am also Orton Gillingham trained and believe that every student can succeed with hard work and effort.

The modern learning environment has changed to be unrecognizable from what it was before COVID. The shaky, overburdened education system is in dire need of support, and I am more than happy to give it.In the past I have worked as a substitute teacher and a tutor.I am a graduate of Juniata College. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English, so Literature, Reading Comprehension and Grammar are my strongest subjects, but I also have a lifelong interest in and passion for history. My tutoring style is firm but friendly, and I always try to tie material to current events or things that might help a student relate to the material more readily.
