I am a graduate of the University of California Santa Barbara. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics with an emphasis on Spanish. My experiences in education include tutoring students in a varied range of subjects and teaching English in China. I tutor Spanish and Math, with an immense passion for both! My passion for tutoring comes from the ability to aid a student perform as well as they want to, in the end realizing their full potential and going beyond what they expect of themselves. I firmly believe that every student has the ability to become whom ever they wish to become in their adult lives. My style of tutoring involves discovering which learning style a student is best comfortable with, and providing him or her with the appropriate techniques of learning. In my spare time I enjoy horseback riding, exercising, hiking, gaming, traveling, and looking at the night sky! I love to challenge myself in every aspect of my life and am always more than willing to help someone reach his or her full potential! I am dedicated to the empowerment of others through self-realization.

I have a Master's Degree in English from the University of Pittsburgh. When I was an undergraduate, I volunteered in the local adult literacy program, which gave me my first taste of the joys of teaching. Since then, I've mentored and tutored students in a variety of disciplines. I also have many years of experience as a professional freelance writer. While I'm equally comfortable tutoring elementary, middle school, and high school kids in all areas of study -- I've homeschooled my son (now 15 years old) in all subjects from Kindergarten on -- the subjects I most enjoy teaching are writing, reading, and literature. I feel passionately about sharing my love of language with students, and I'm qualified to tutor writing and literary comprehension at all levels, elementary through college. I also enjoy helping kids prepare for standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, and GRE.Patience and gentle encouragement have been my most effective tools in helping young learners, and it's important to me that my students know that I'm on their side as they struggle with new challenges. (I'm especially proud of the fact that my son, who is dyslexic, has become a confident and accomplished reader through the work we've done together over the years.) Helping kids learn truly makes me happy! In my free time, I enjoy reading, baking -- especially chocolate!, and going to the theater. I also love animals, music, history, and learning about other cultures.

I knew long ago that I disliked competitive standardized tests. However, I have found that a curriculum that is insightful, relevant, and driven by a passionate instructor can make education much more worthwhile and engaging for students. As a teenager, doing well in school was not my top priority. The morning of the SAT I was much more interested in listening to my mp3 player than doing well on the test. Fast forward a few years: Today I take my classes seriously and am always looking for ways to improve myself as a scholar. You might ask, "What happened during those in-between years?" The answer is that I discovered several passions. I now have a passion for seeking out ways to change the society we live in, rather than simply sitting back and criticizing it without taking action. I am also passionate about history, language-learning, mindfulness and social and environmental justice. My newly discovered passions have led me to believe that I must strive to be my best possible self in order to help others -- hence my renewed motivation in school. It has also translated into a strong desire to share what I am passionate about with other young people who are on their own journeys through the often unequal (and unfortunately sometimes boring) education system in the United States. I am interested in working as a tutor today (and a teacher in the future) because I believe that my passion for education and my story of transformation from bored to engaged student can help young people who are struggling to succeed.

I am a graduate of the University of Kentucky's College of Engineering with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering and a minor in Classics giving me a strong background in mathematics, language and the hard sciences. My Tutoring experience began with volunteering for a Homework Help program through the National Honor's Society in high school and I have been helping students in one degree or another ever since.Having always been an avid learner, I seek out new information and want to pass on my love of learning to others. I enjoy starting at the student's current level and working with them until they are where they need to be, patiently explaining to them concepts instead of giving them answers to memorize for a stronger foundation in their subjects to better prepare them for the future. In my spare time, I enjoy listening to thunderstorms, reading, knitting, playing the piano and being with friends and family.

I am currently pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University. As a tutor, I find it extremely rewarding when I am able to break down complex and intricate concepts and truly help students understand the foundational components of their subject areas. Specifically, I love helping students with SAT test prep, math, and essay writing, as I believe I have mastered the college admissions process, having gone through it not too long ago myself. As a current student, I understand the standards many teenagers are held to and the stress many of them are faced with, and thus would like to impart my knowledge and experience! I also enjoy teaching elementary and middle school students essential skills that they will undoubtedly build upon as they progress into secondary and post-secondary education.

As both as an educator and a writer, I've discovered that so much of life involves communication; not only bringing thoughts and feelings "to the surface," but learning how best to articulate and express them, both in written form and verbally. I love to see students gain confidence as they master concepts, integrate ideas, discover truths about themselves and become emotionally invested in the learning process. After all, learning is a blast: it's a lot of fun to learn! To that end, I have taught students from age 5 to 98, in a wide variety of settings and under quite a range of circumstances for more than forty years. Aside from teaching English Composition and ESL at four California community colleges, in Japan for a year, and briefly at The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), I taught poetry reading in over fifty schools to students in three states (K-12) for 25 years through California Poets in the Schools. For over three years, I worked as a High School substitute, subbing in English, History, Biology, Foreign Language and PE classes. When opportunities to teach Screenplay, Fiction and Poetry Writing in California prisons, juvenile detention facilities and a State Hospital arose, I immediately took them up! Such challenges were wonderfully gratifying and provided me with plenty of opportunities to hone my teaching skills. With regards to my education, as an undergraduate in search of a Creative Writing degree, I attended The University of Oregon, The University of California, Santa Barbara and The University of California, Santa Cruz. As a graduate student, I attended The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) for my ESL studies and The University of Southern California (USC) for my graduate school work in Creative Writing.I attained a Bachelor's Degree in Creative Writing and Art (Aesthetic Studies) from UC Santa Cruz. I attained my ESL certification and three other forms of licensure from UCLA and my master's degree in Professional Writing (Fiction and Poetry) from The University of Southern California (USC).Over the last twenty years I have tutored English Composition, English grammar and all levels of ESL, primarily reading, writing and conversation. In terms of special subjects, I tutor Poetry Writing, Fiction Writing and Screenplay. I also have a great deal of experience editing other people's work. The easy answer to my favorite subject is whatever I'm tutoring or teaching at the present time. I love teaching all of the earlier subjects I mentioned, though ESL probably provides the most immediate gratification. Mastering a new language, though difficult, is so rewarding and, at times, thrilling. English is quite challenging for non-native speakers and it always feels like a real privilege to try and guide such students through. In terms of my teaching philosophy and tutoring style, I very much believe in what used to be called the affective domain encouraging students to invest themselves emotionally in subjects that interest them and helping emotionally engage students in subjects that they must "master," but resist. My approach is sort of soft-sell Socratic, in that I pose lots of questions to my students. This helps them learn through the use of critical thinking, reasoning and logic, though we seldom venture into the terminology!
