I first discovered my love for teaching during my childhood. I have always enjoyed watching a student's confidence and academic ability grow throughout the year. This is my second year teaching in Chicago Public Schools and one of my favorite parts about teaching is getting to know my students and their interests inside and outside of school. When I am not teaching or tutoring, I enjoy volunteering through Habitat for Humanity, traveling around the world, and enjoying the Chicago life. After completing secondary school in South Africa, I did a PG year at a high school in Connecticut.During my year in Connecticut, I took Honors and AP Chemistry, Honors and AP Physics, and Honors Calculus; I also received the CollegeBoard AP Scholar with Honors Award.I have experience tutoring the New SAT. I understand the material and subtle nuances of the test. I have developed test-taking strategies that help a great deal when taking the SAT.

My name is Derek. I am a recent graduate from the University of California at Santa Barbara, where I was a part of the Honors Program and graduated with High Honors. I have always loved learning and academics in general, and will hopefully soon be pursing a graduate degree in Political Science.I have a large amount of experience tutoring students in late elementary through high school in one-on-one settings. My students have ranged from highly motivated individuals wanting to go from a B+ to an A to students having difficulty passing a tough class, and I strive to match my style and depth of instruction with the knowledge level of the student.I strongly believe everybody has the potential to succeed, and a recurring theme of my tutoring is that my students should recognize their own potential by 1) identifying their current position, 2) identifying their desired position, and 3) setting schedules and goals that help the former become the latter.

I am a graduate of Rice University with a degree in Mathematical Economic Analysis. Throughout college, I worked extensively with middle and early high school students, tutoring and teaching Math and Algebra. I also worked for three years with students, age 3-12, in a non-profit setting, as an employee and volunteer, helping them to learn about and explore a variety of Science and Social Science topics. Though I enjoy working with all subjects, teaching Math is my passion. I know that everyone has the potential to understand Math. My goal is to make sure that every student that I work with realizes their own potential, becomes a more confident mathematician, and is ultimately able to reach whatever level of success they aspire to. In my spare time, I enjoy running, Barre and Pilates classes, and cooking. I am also a lifelong horse lover and ride western and saddle-seat.

I am currently a student at Villanova University. I am a die-hard basketball fan and a huge wildcat fan. At the same time, I strive to excel in academics. I am on the pre-med track and have a strong keen for chemistry. I am very confident with my skills in mathematics and am proficient in manipulating math into science. I hope to make math and science more enjoyable and much easier for my students.

I am pursuing my Bachelor's in Chemistry at New York University. Helping fellow students has always been a passion of mine. I think that the goal of tutoring shouldn't be to simply help students pass tests or raise their grades. My goal whenever I tutor is to help the student feel confident and comfortable enough to continue growing independently long after tutoring sessions. I have tutoring experience in Reading, Math, and Sciences with all ages of elementary students, as well as Calculus and Chemistry with high school students. All these varied experiences have shown me that everyone learns in different ways. Some people need practice with fundamentals, others learn with visual representations, and so on. My goal with tutoring is to help people find the way they can understand something, allowing them to continue independently in the future.My peers and I enjoyed this so much that we started a volunteer program for NYU undergraduates to tutor in elementary schools. This has further exposed me to a large array of teaching and learning styles which I try to draw on when understanding how to help teach. This experience is a major reason why I choose to continue helping students like myself. School can be frustrating, but finding the ways that allow you as an individual to learn can transform learning into a much more fun and rewarding experience. Once I get to know individual students, I can help create practice work or assignments to solidify new skills. For some people this could mean practice problems. For others, this could mean watching assigned videos and following along. If one method doesn't seem to work, I will try something new!I specialize in high school level Sciences and Mathematics, ranging from Pre-Algebra to AP Calculus prep. This also includes preparation for SAT Subject/AP tests such as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (1&2). I am also experienced with elementary aged students teaching Reading and Math.

I am a graduate of St Matthews University School of Medicine. From St. Matthews, I received my Doctorateof Medicine. I received my Bachelor of Science, with the focus in Mathematics, from Howard University.Since graduation, I have practiced medicine in Jamaica and taught mathematics in New York City. While Iam able to tutor a broad range of subjects, my favorite is mathematics. I love math and I am passionateabout helping students master mathematical concepts. More particularly I try to instill a similarenthusiasm for the subject within my students by showing them how math can be applied to benefit them in their real lives. I try to build on their confidence in their mathematical ability while emphasizing howthe process of reaching their academic goal can be a lot of fun.
