My go-to tactic to build confidence and rapport with a student is to have them write essays about topics that they choose. Love Minecraft? Write a process paper telling me how to build (and destroy) your base. Obsessed with Taylor Swift? Compare and contrast her early works with later stuff. Really dislike spaghetti and meatballs. Let's design an argumentative essay with three reasons why they should be removed from the menu forever. I find this technqiue is fun, light-hearted, and let's us get to the bones of how to write without the added weight of research or the struggle to educate oneself on a weighter topic.
