Certified Tutor
Hello to each and every one of you Spanish-language lovers. My name is Jose. Just like my name, you'll find that I'm a true Hispanic! A tropical bird who has traveled the world a bit and lived in few but very different countries, in terms of language, culture, politics, and religion. I'm a scientist by training, with a PhD from the United Kingdom, where I gained my first experience as a salsa tutor, and was delighted teaching in pubs to those interested in Afro-Cuban rhythms. That is because I'm a Cuban music lover, and a lover of dancing what people called salsa! I completed a postdoctoral internship in Malaysia, where I made my debut as a Spanish tutor. From Malaysia, I brought back to my home country Colombia a burse to make research in biomedical sciences, and then I become a lecturer in a medicine faculty where I taught for ten years to groups of 60 to 100 students and directed thesis for biomedical science students. Then, I moved to Vancouver, Canada where again I enjoyed tutoring salsa lesson, especially for Asians, real lovers of the Latin-swing. A decade ago I moved again to my actual residence, Quebec, where I learnt French and gave my first English lesson to young students.
My favorite tool for learning-teaching a language is through cultural inspiration, that is, music, literature, and the way people who speak that language see the world. My approach to tutor language is to immerse practitioners in the joy of the language, mainly by the presentation of cultural elements in a historical and geographical context, which explains at the end the diversity in accents and idioms, and help to understand contexts.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy practising sports (jogging, swimming), dancing and listening to salsa, boleros and tangos. I'm always looking for new ways to learn from others and grow. I'm excited to get to know all of you and work together to help you achieve success and enjoying in the process!
