I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am currently a student at the University of Rochester, going into my second year and pursuing a major in Biomedical Engineering. I graduated from St. John's Preparatory School in 2024. I tutor Math, Biology, and Chemistry. I enjoy teaching these subjects because they all take time and effort to learn but are quite satisfying to understand. I have always found helping people bridge the gap from the unknown to practical intuition to be worthwhile. My teaching philosophy is that of a peer, rather than an instructor. I have found that hearing an explanation from a fellow student can help to bridge the gap of confusion in more complicated subjects. A recent student can recall what was difficult about the class and explain how they worked through that confusion. I found this philosophy to be especially helpful in college-level math, where the teachers often don't have the time to explain rigorous subjects slowly. Being able to ask questions of a former student and hear clarifying feedback is very helpful. My goal as a tutor is to help students understand what is happening qualitatively, in addition to teaching them how to quantitatively answer a question.
