There are two main reasons that I have developed an interest in helping students. The first is the satisfaction that I get when a student is able to transform his or her understanding of a topic. I get very excited when I feel I have successfully guided a student on their journey from an initial point of ignorance to a point of higher understanding. My second reason for wanting to help students is that I also get to develop a deeper understanding of the material as we make our way through topics together.
It has been my experience that the most effective way to learn something is by understanding as much of the logic behind the concept as possible. Rote memorization is not enough. These memories will be transient. However, when students understand underlying reasons for an event, a stronger, more reliable, and resilient neural pathway is created, cementing the memory into the brain. This is why I choose to help students understand things from the most fundamental level possible. I think it is best to start with a sturdy foundation and build upon it.
I am currently in my fourth year of obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics from Indiana University, Bloomington. I am passionate about chemistry and am interested in helping young undergraduates, high schoolers, or younger kids develop a better understanding of chemistry. While chemistry is my main subject, I am also interested in assisting students in maturing their understanding of physics and mathematics at the high school level or below.
