I am a recent graduate from Wesleyan University (CT) with a Bachelor of Arts in English and in German Studies. I completed an undergraduate thesis for the English department, which received High Honors. My primary interest is in American Literature, but I have plenty of experience with literary forms and styles from across the world and a strong proficiency in English language, grammar, analysis, and criticism.
My previous tutoring work came in a group setting while living and studying in Hamburg, Germany. There I ran and designed courses for a group of university students working to learn English as a second language. Within that, I also did some individual lessons for specific needs or interests, so I am flexible with work between individuals and smaller groups.
I believe, for the greatest engagement with a student, they should be encouraged to dictate their own interest within a specific subject. Especially for the study of English, a sparked interest leads to a deeper appreciation and understanding of the work. When a student becomes excited about what they are discovering, it is much easier to encourage the discovery or reveal the more subtle facets of the subject. I hope to be able to translate some of my personal passion for English to my tutee.
I find a passion for the study of English as it applies beyond the classroom as well. The skills required to engage with media, to fully understand contexts and sub-contexts, and to interact with the wider world are established through the study of English.
