Elizabeth: Marquette County tutor
Certified Tutor
I am a graduate of Chicago State University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Special Education, a Masters in Early Childhood Education and a Masters in Educational Leadership. I taught English Literature to high school students grades 9-12. I've owned my own home daycare, and worked in a daycare center for 5 years. This is when I realized teaching children to read and understand the world around them is important to me. It guides my efforts to help those students who have difficulty learning to read through traditional models.
It it exciting to have students learn to read and approach the written word with confidence. They are excited to learn how to read and write in class and eventually read and write in a variety of settings. The students are confident that working with me will give them the skills they need to become productive adults.
I first begin tutoring reading and working with a student by exploring the current ability of each student. Then I analyze word attack skill and preexisting reading strategies that give me a starting point for developing an individualized approach.
Finally, my teaching and tutoring style start by utilizing a variety of approaches including phonemic awareness, whole word approach and linguistic based knowledge, I am able to help the student that previously had difficulty reading.
My interest outside of academia, I was an adjunct professor for a community college where I taught two night classes.
