I am a graduate of Purdue University, where I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education with a kindergarten endorsement. After graduation, I had the privilege of teaching in both the kindergarten and pre-kindergarten programs at Brookshire Learning Center (formerly Burgett's Learning Center), where I worked with children of all ability levels, including those with ADHD, autism, hearing deficits, and other learning differences, from 1996 to 2023.
My journey into the world of dyslexia began after watching a training video that piqued my interest. Determined to deepen my understanding, I devoted years to learning about dyslexia through books, conferences, newsletters, videos, and webinars, and became a member of The International Dyslexia Association. In 2016, I started offering reading and spelling interventions, using the Barton Reading & Spelling System to help struggling students develop the skills they needed to succeed.
I firmly believe that every student has value and can thrive when instruction is tailored to their individual learning style. My approach to tutoring is rooted in the mantra "set each student up for success." I make a point to get to know each student, structuring lessons to align with their specific needs and preferences. I present procedures in a way that ensures success at every step and monitor students closely to identify any misunderstandings. When necessary, I quickly address confusion with supplemental materials.
The work I do with dyslexic students is incredibly rewarding. One of my most gratifying moments came when a student excitedly shared that they had read several chapters of a book independently before our next tutoring session. Similarly, hearing children express that they are beginning to enjoy reading after completing just a few levels of tutoring is a heartwarming reminder of why I do this work. I was also deeply moved when two clients shared that the tutoring sessions I provided had done more for their children's mental well-being than therapy sessions hadproof of the profound impact that appropriate educational support can have.
Despite the success stories I've had, I remain committed to expanding my knowledge and skills in the field of dyslexia. In 2022, I completed Volume 1 of LETRS training at a mastery level and am an active member of The Reading League Indiana. I plan to begin Volume 2 of LETRS training by this summer.
Ultimately, my goal is to help every client see their own value while building the skills they need to read and spell confidently. I look forward to continuing to help students reach their full potential and achieve success.
