In high school, my parents required me to get a job. In the summers I worked as a teacher's assistant. My main job was working on bulletin boards, but when I saw students struggling, I asked the teacher if I could help them read. She said yes and it was that moment that I was hooked. Giving someone the confidence and the tools to help them become successful learners is the best reward one could experience. I have participated in the realm of education for over 30 years. I attended Texas A&M University from 1993 through 1997 while raising three children. In 1997 I received a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies. I also received an elementary Self-Contained Certificate for Grades (PK-6) and an Elementary Early Childhood Education Certificate for Grades (PK-6). I immediately began my career in education right after graduation as a third-grade teacher. For the next ten years, I taught 2nd and 3rd graders all subjects. Because I had obtained a Bilingual Education Supplemental-Spanish Certificate for Grades (EC-4), I also instructed English Language Learners. Unfortunately, when my parents fell ill, I had to leave my position to focus on caring for them. Soon after, I came across the opportunity to teach English to students. Because of this, I pursued a certificate in TOPT and an English as a Second Language Supplemental for Grades (PK-6). Again, the honor of watching students grow as learners was heartwarming. I went back to my alma mater, Texas A & M International University to attain my master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in reading. Today, I continue to help students. At the elementary level, I privately tutor for science, and I assist students to revise and edit their papers for high school or college-level assignments. When it comes to the elementary level, I love teaching math because you witness all of these "aha" moments. You get to see when the student gets it as their face lights up. I also love tutoring science to elementary students because their minds are like sponges and they are full of awe. Finally, I love to work on writing assignments with high school or college entry level because I am amazed at the thinking process that goes into gathering the words that will eventually become the voice of their paper. My teaching philosophy and tutoring style determine what the student needs. If the student wants a goofy fun person that will help with understanding. I will do that. If the students want a get down to business and work, work, work, I will do that too. I think it is important for the students to lead the session so they can get everything they need out of the session. I am simply a guide that will take them where they need or want to be. Above all, my goal is to produce independent successful learners that will confidently go out and conquer the world.
