Certified Tutor

I come from a family of teachers. I learned from them that along with the capacity to think and love, knowledge is the most important thing we pass on to our children, and to theirs. The most important channels through which it is transmitted are, of course, parents and teachers. Additionally, and to a lesser but still critical extent, subject matter tutors can be irreplaceable.

I hold a Doctorate in Economics from the University of Texas at Austin, a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Philosophy from New College of Florida in Sarasota, and a Master's in Labor and Industrial Economics from the University of North Texas in Denton.

While in graduate school, I personally learned about the value of tutoring because I was tutored in calculus and econometrics, and showed marked improvement in both. Still in grad school, I taught economics to undergraduates, and privately tutored high school students in history and expository writing.

Since then, I have interwoven academic teaching (14 years, undergrad and grad) and research appointments at major universities with extensive work in government and the aerospace industry, as an economic analyst and statistical consultant, and as an economic modeling and Federal Reserve Bank documentation specialist for two of the top three money center banks in the US.

Along the way I co-authored a statistical textbook for newcomers and analytics professionals, published four book-length research monographs, and wrote more than three dozen scholarly, technical, and popular economic articles. I have also written many dozens of technical reports, business development and grant proposals, and business white papers.

I hope to engage student-clients with my knowledge of macro- and microeconomic theory and dynamics, applied statistical and data analysis, economic methodology, economic history, comparative economic systems, business dynamics, regional and development economics, and labor economics.

And given my extensive writing and publication history, one additional and hopefully useful tutoring focus is general to the social sciences as a whole and a variety of business economic or data-analytic settings: the writing of professional and technical reports and presentations, research documentation, research proposals, academic or scholarly papers, theses, and dissertations.

I know a good deal about all these purposes and audiences, and I can provide thoughtful and insightful guidance for all business writing. I am particularly interested in theses and dissertations.

As an undergraduate, I received funding from the Noyes Foundation to research and write my Baccalaureate Thesis at New College. It examined, in the mid-1970s, the possibility of climate change in the 21st century as the result of market system behaviors.

Later, I researched, conducted the data analysis, and wrote a Master's thesis on Texas urban labor markets. And for the terminal degree, my study of foreign direct investment in the US South and Midwest was named a National Finalist by the Ford Foundation and Aspen Institute in their annual funding competition for Doctoral Dissertations focusing on Rural Economic Development.

And after all that, to complete the cycle of knowledge transmission, I've been substitute teaching recently in the Dallas public schools, working most successfully with kindergarten and primary children, and those in special education.

Hobbies

My interest and hobbies are varied. I read anything geopolitical or geo- economic. I love to watch baseball and play basketball. I like to build and fly model planes and rockets. And I am a published poet (one poem) and the recent author of a currently unpublished 50- page poetry manuscript, "Tableaux." I am proud to report that in my continued pursuit of the lyrical, my poems have been rejected by some of the finest literary journals in the Western World.
