Hi! My name is Abbie. I am a student at the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Wilkes Honors College, double majoring in neuroscience and interdisciplinary mathematics in the combined Bachelor of Science and Medical Doctorate degree (BS/MD) program. I was the valedictorian of my high school, scored a 1550 on the SAT (perfect score of 800 in math/750 in reading and writing), and am a National Merit Scholar. I have extensive experience with advanced mathematics, and earned a 5 on the AP Calculus AB exam as an 8th grader. In addition to completing AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Computer Science Applications, and AP Computer Science Principles, I also studied Calculus 3, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations at the college level through dual enrollment. My senior year of high school, I completed a course in Neural Networks a mixed senior / graduate (4000/5000) level course at the Florida Institute of Technology that constructed neural networks from scratch using multivariate calculus. My major coursework in interdisciplinary mathematics at FAU has included data science, and AI applications in biology. I am currently working in the Pena Lab for Computational Neuroscience, studying the use of a tree shrew as a model organism to computationally model the visual cortex based on stimulus orientation, size, and location in space.
I have been tutoring for 4 years in a variety of different math levels ranging from Pre-Algebra through AP Calculus BC. I reactivated an inactive chapter of Mu Alpha Theta National Math Honor Society at my high school, and was able to create a math tutoring program through this chapter to ensure that both current and future students would have a pathway to achieve their mathematical goals. I am a patient and understanding tutor who truly wants to help students by giving them the tools they need to succeed. This involves not simply solving the problems but also providing reasoning behind the problem so that the students can apply this logic to solve similar problems. My philosophy is that understanding the problem-solving process is often more important than coming up with the correct answer given a specific question. This allows students to generalize what they have learned to any similar problem.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions. I hope to be able to help you achieve success!
