Hello, I am Sam! I recently graduated from Fordham University with a BS in chemistry and a minor in computer science. Ever since I was a boy, I knew I loved science (my first love was paleontology and all things dinosaurs), but after hearing horror stories about how difficult a STEM education could be, I was a bit intimidated. This meant that I entered college without a declared major, and when I finally decided on taking the plunge into chemistry, I had to put in overtime to catch up! A great many tutors, teachers and professors helped me catch up to my peers, and I would like to pay that help forward to the next generation of learners.
I have experience in tutoring all age groups across multiple subjects. During my freshman year of college at Fordham University, I volunteered for a non-profit tutoring organization to provide free after school tutoring and test prep for Bronx high schoolers. I taught a classroom of over 15 students (many of which were hardly a year younger than me) SAT math and english topics as well as general test taking strategies. I frequently stayed after class was over to answer questions about the college application process and what college life was like, especially for someone interested in STEM.
Following that experience, I tutored groups of elementary and middle schoolers the basics of computer science in Princeton using Scratch. I once again had control of a classroom of over 15 students, but this time was not given a lesson plan or book to follow. This experience taught me how to capture and maintain interest in a lesson. I frequently utilized games and competition to foster excitement for learning.
Finally, during my final year of college, I worked at a Bronx charter school acting as an afterschool tutor. I helped students with their homework of all subjects and made lessons relating their personal interests or everyday experiences to STEM courses that they were taking.
