In other words, Math is a language as much as it is a skill. A language that anyone can learn. I tutor many different kinds of college-level mathematics. Regardless of the topic, I believe understanding is only a matter of time rather than a matter of ability.
I learned math with the intention of using it. That's why I graduated from Florida State University with a B.S. in Applied Mathematics and Actuarial Science. Thus, I am more than happy to help students with the question of "why", when it comes to the math they are learning if they are interested. In particular, I'm open to sharing knowledge and curating interest in Mathematical Modeling and Statistics.
My tutoring experience spans a couple of years from FSU to PBSC helping college students with all levels of under-graduate math. Oftentimes, the students I work with feel the need to present reasons for their shortcomings. "I dropped out high school" or "I'm terrible at math" are the most common reasons I receive. It's a bit disparaging when students feel the need to explain themselves in any way. When you come to tutoring, the focus isn't on what you should have done but on what we can do now. You're here to improve yourself. Your background doesn't matter. With enough time and focus, grasping the language of math, is inevitable.
